Hi Sheila,

Well, today was the day!!

Off I went to Ballangeich and found the Lair within two minutes!

The inscription is as follows:

"In memory of Robert Allardice who died 16th October 1953
And his sister Mary who died 12th April 1903
Also his father Charles Allardice who died 1st January 1916
And his mother Mary McFarlane who died 19th February 1950
Also his daughter Mary who died 17th July 1961"

If you send me your personal e-mail address by PM, I'll send you the photos.

I meant to say, obviously no sign of Helen.

Do you think she might have been buried in Larbert? The Larbert side of Stirlingshire is under a different authority, Falkirk District.

Here's a link to them:

http://www.falkirk.gov.uk/services/comm ... eries.aspx

Unfortunately, they don't have the same reputation for answering queries as Stirling and I've heard of folks having to wait months even for an acknowledgement. Try dropping them a line and if I get a chance, I'll pop into the office. Depending on what mood they're in, I'll see if I can find Helen (or any other Allardices who may be related somewhere along the line)

Thanks Anne

I have sent an email, so we'll see how long it takes to get an answer.

Helens married name was Allardice, so there may be something under either Allardice or her maiden name of Barrie.

Any info would be wonderful!

One of the entries on the page does have illegt. so maybe they really were married!

I just keep on hoping that something will point me in the direction of Helens birth family.

I guess she doesn't want me to know yet!

Kind regards .. Sheilavee
The other important clue is how exactly the parents are described.

Normally, for a married couple, they will be described as "John SMITH and his spouse Mary BROWN", it being perfectly normal for a woman in Scotland to retain her maiden name in this manner.

If the description, however, is "John SMITH and Mary BROWN" then the strong likelihood is that they weren't married.

What is the phrasing used in other entries on the page?

Why would there be an entry such as "John SMITH and Mary BROWN" without the kid being described as "natural" or " begot in fornication"., etc., etc.?

Two possible reasons, - (a) the session clerk made a mistake, possibly connected to a hangover  or (b) the child was the result of adultery, .................

Hi David,

All the entries on the page are done in exactly the same way as mine.

Allardice Robert, Muir of Drumshade by Helen Barret (born 12 Decr 1848) Betsy

Some of them dont have the date of birth, and the only one that had 'illegt' had it written between the mothers name and the dob. There is no 'natural', 'lawful' or any such description on any of the entries on the page.

Given the apparantly standard format, all the other sets of parents are married.
