Love that address!! :D
Apart from being the river, Water of Leith was also the name for Dean Village, so the address as such was Broken Stairs in Water of Leith (Dean Village).

The description for that enumeration district was:
All of the houses on the north side of the Mill Dam west of the shop occupied by Alexander Ross, Grocer, the houses on both sides of the Broken Stairs and the houses on the west side of the road called Deanpath from Broken Stairs to Queensferry Road - (said to contain 67 families).
The enumerator's notes go on to describe them as all being in Water of Leith.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Sarah, Jean and Andrew,

Wow you have been busy while I've been in the Land of Nod :D

Will have to digest all of this later and get the credit card out again.

From what I can remember of Dean Village Andrew I bet there were quite a few broken stairs

Hi Paula

Hold the presses! That's not the right family!! Don't follow David Gavin pressman anywhere as his parents were David Gavin and Catherine Mill. It was a longshot but it didn't come in.

So now let's return to the Gavin/Renton people. Sarah found Helen but there is also one more daughter from the IGI....Alison...

1. ALISON GAVEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 17 JUL 1814 Newton, Midlothian, Scotland

2. HELEN GIVAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 12 JAN 1812 Newton, Midlothian, Scotland

Now to try and find if she holds any clues........

Best wishes
jean

Hi All

Here's another couple of kids! Spelling this time is Givon

AILSA GIVON
Female

Christening: 16 MAY 1817 Duddingston, Midlothian, Scotland

Parents:
Father: ROBERT GIVON
Mother: CATHARINE RENTON

CATHARINE GIVON
Female

Christening: 17 SEP 1815 Duddingston, Midlothian, Scotland

Parents:
Father: ROBERT GIVON Family
Mother: KATHARINE RENTON

In view of the many spellings of Givan/Govan/ Givin /Goven etc. Would it be worthwhile looking for Helen's death as Hel*en G*v*n

Best wishes
Jean

Now then, here's a Findlater Givan in 1881. Unfortunately he is a boarder. His parents appear to be John Givan/Given and Isabel Johnstone and this pair have 8 more bairns!

Nice find!
Surely all the Findlaters must be related? (as well as the Tynlylors and Finlytons  )
Been busy downloading Fasti, glad to see others have been busy with the G*v*n family :D

Hi All,

Goodness you've all been busy while I've been out. Thanks very much!

Tried death for Hel*en G*v*n and only one comes up

Helen Govan died 8 Dec 1886 aged 72 Pettinain, Lanarks married to Daniel Girdwood (thatcher). Parents Findlater Govan and Christian Govan MS Noble. Informant daughter Elizabeth.

Now I don't know about you but my head is spinning with all these different spellings. I've got Robert Given & Catherine Rentons 5 daughters now. (Why couldn't they have had some sons). The only one which gives a witness is Elizabeth in 1830 - Jas Renton who was probably Catherines big brother born 1773.

Have chased Findlater through the census and in 1901 hes boarding with a family who have children with the middle name Given!!
Parents are George Irvine and Christina Given married 21 Apr 1871.
A bit more searching found Christinas parents as Adam Given & Jane Paterson.
Ignore that last bit - its a submission
Off to do a bit of digging on Adam.

Paula

PS I got the job!!

Hi Paula

Congrats on getting the job :D

Let us know how you get on with Adam and any others you find!

I like it when all the bits come together!

Good news! :D This must be your lucky day... But I agree that my head is spinning on this also. Findlater again-- Aaack!!! But those are Christian's parents... and we hadn't yet seen a Helen in that family, had we?

If you search for *el*n* (to get Helen, Ellen, Elinor, etc.) g?v?n* (since some of them had an 'e' at the end) there are a few more possibilities. But maybe we don't want any more

This one, for example:
1869 GIVANS HELEN DUNYAN F 55 SPRINGBURN GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 622/02 0245

I have been trying vainly to find her in censuses. So maybe its a Helen Dunyan who married a Givans. Anyway, the Findlater stuff has to be figured out somehow, because there has to be a link!

Sarah, whose head is still spinning

Hi Paula

I had a wee peek at the 1830 OPR birth of Elizabeth and saw the witnesses too....and so not being able to resist wandering off.....found this interesting entry in the 1841 census.....

Name: James Renton
Age: 70
Estimated birth year: abt 1771
Gender: Male
Where born: Midlothian, Scotland

Civil parish: Inveresk
County: Midlothian
Address: Carnie Road
Parish Number: 689
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Alison Banken 20
James Banken 16
Jessie Banken 18
Peter Banken 14
Isabela Ranken 21
James Ranken 45
James Renton 70

so now I'm wondering if Jas Rankin and Jas Renton the two witnesses were these two living in the same household 11 years later? :-k If we only had family relationships!!!!! I'd wager that James Rankin might have been married to a Renton gal......and there is that christian name Alison coming up again.

and then just to be further interesting.....here's a Renton family in Newton....

Name: James Renton
Age: 30
Estimated birth year: abt 1811
Gender: Male
Where born: Midlothian, Scotland

Civil parish: Newton
County: Midlothian
Address: Harelaw
Occupation: Ag Lab
Parish Number: 696
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Elizabeth Bennet 4
Alison Renton 65
James Renton 30

Another James....an elder Alison....dunno who the wee Elizabeth is at the moment but based on names and location I'd bet even more money they are connected to your Renton line.

Are we wandering too far away from the Melville search???? Hmmmmm...

Best wishes
Jean
