SP are back to 'normal' again, but as before I can't save or print the image OPR in either way. I can do either with other certificates with no problems at all. OPR's print as a black page of ink.
I tried right clicking and "Save target as" on the image iteself and cannot, then tried on the File icon, which saves the icon only (!) on the "View" on the page entry, but get a message box announcing "Internet Explorer cannot download. No such interface supported".

Can't find him on the census

Post by melody » Tue Jun 12, 2007 10:18 pm

Hi Jake,
Don't know if this is any help to you but I had a lot of trouble finding someone on the census. I found her by accident. I looked for her brother and found he was living with her and her husband. Yet the search always came up blank for her. Her name was Kezia Walkinshaw but the handwriting on the census is so bad that I am sure it was transcribed as something else. So maybe try some wild and wacky spellings or soundalikes. Maybe he was in Scotland and just mistranscribed? Or maybe not. Good luck.

Hi melody

From reading your post I wonder if you're aware that it's possible to search on www.ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk using wildcards? It's a useful technique when the names your are seeking can be variably spelt. It's a simple concept.....use an asterisk symbol like so * to stand in for one or more letters or no letters. Use a question mark symbol to stand in for just one letter. So for example...with your name of Kezia Walkinshaw I'd be tempted to look for it like so:

Kez* Walkin*

This should not return too many choices but should also pick up a possible spelling like Keziah Walkingshay for a wild example. (I'm making that up just to show you an extreme! :D )

Hope this might be helpful for your future searches.

Best wishes
Jean

Robert Cowan

Post by Jack » Wed Jun 13, 2007 10:48 pm

Hi Jake,
This from Ancestry; as CREVANI - haven't a clue what GROS & SP have it as!
Anyway, could this be Robert COWAN?
A look at the original page on the film roll may help.

Later - GROS has the name as COWAIN; i've now amended the census.
But i can sympathise with any transcriber on this one - it's not easy to be certain.
Cowan / Cowain - could be either.

1851 census 422 Ed 2, p 1, lines 1-4 (Dalgety - Fife)
West Square.
Robert COWAIN, head, 22, coal miner, b Dalgety, FIF
Elizabeth COWAIN, wife, 25, ------------b nk, MLN
[just a birthplace error?]
Joseph COWAIN, son, 3, ----------------b Dalgety, FIF
Robert COWAIN, son, 1, ----------------b Dalgety, FIF

--
Jack
====
ps - later again; this looks a fair possible for Robert COWAN in 1861.
Though he's dittoed as an ironstone miner, and not coal miner.
And perhaps it's just coincidence that he's boarding with a man of the same surname?
Can't see any obvious connection.
But Janet Cowan's 1855 BC says parents Robert Cowan & Elizabeth Penman married Shotts 1846.

pps - and later yet...this concerns Robert's father Joseph COWAN.
I know you already have a lot of this, and perhaps it all? But in case not.

[a confusing census on some occupations...eg coal miner wife & a 7 months old scholar...]
[this, like most others here, from Ancestry]

Christian Morris should've died 1861-1867, as James re-married as a widower in 1867.
And he's now given up the mines to become a spirit merchant.

ppps, much later; seems others on the Rootsweb Fife List also have an interest in your Cowan & Penman names....
Do a search in the archives for "Cowan AND Penman"

I'm busy checking through the info right now, many thanks Jack. I have some of what you found, not by any means all of it though, so you've done a great job.
I'm trying to keep a search going on so many branches of the tree so any help is welcome!
Brilliant!
