Never despair. We Scots are nothing if not persistent (just see how often our sports teams lose but do we give up playing??) [scotland-flag] Most of us here have been digging away for years and we're still almost sane.

Hi Elaine:

I've been reading through all of the postings, and I think Anne is giving you very solid advice. Sort through your findings by writing them all out and identifying the sources where each of the facts were found.

I've found this identification of source extremely useful. If it is an original document, it would be 4* If it is a photocopy of the registration, it would be 3* If it is census, it would be 2* Anything less would be ancedotal or 1* - that would include unidentified sources or things that others have found, or family stories, rumours or gossip :) . This will help you identify which of your 'sources' can be considered valid and those which you may like to upgrade.

In the case of my Lipsett family, it's not hard to determine one as belonging as it is not a really common name to follow in Glasgow. But when it comes to Kelly and Smith, that's where I've found the greatest need to see the best source I can find.

For the documents that you've mentioned were not an easy read, you could post them to the gallery for clarification.

On the whole, I think Anne has given you very solid direction.

Best wishes,
Frances

Hi Frances

Thanks for that, I agree with you Anne has been very helpful and given some good advice. I will use the scoring system you suggested and IA think that will come in very handy.

Well, I've been busy ringing around and got nowhere as usual! I rang the burials/cemetries dept at Angus but they told me to contact Angus Archives, so I've sent an email to them. The Family History Centre's computers were down so they can't help me yet! I'm not having a good day! I will persevere though.

Best wishes,
Elaine.

Hi Anne,

I have been doing more searching today, this time for John Duncan, father to Elizabeth. I was trying to search for a marriage bann/cert but had no luck. I decided to look for a birth for him and came up with a list of possiblities but I wasn't sure which Parish he would be in. Any ideas?

I've also been looking again for a birth for Robert Scott but I think he must be non-existent! I rang the burials/cemetries dept at Angus Council today and they don't go back that far on their records. They advised me to contact Angus Archives (I sent them an email) to see if they have pre 1855 burial records. I'm just waiting for a reply. Don't know what I will do if I draw a blank on that one??

The Family History Centre had problems with their computers and so I couldn't order anything with them. I've not really had a good day today :(
I am going past the Centre tomorrow so may pop in to see if they are up and running then I may be able to get my search underway. I don't suppose they will have birth records for Robert Scott either. I can but try I suppose.
Thanks again for your help.

Elaine.
