Hi Jan,

Lachlan Grant, who died in 1898 aged 95 is in Inverness (the county), not Inverness the town. Select County: Inverness, District: all districts.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Jan,

When is the last time you have sight of Lachlan? There is a likely candidate who died in 1858 in Strath, Inverness-shire, aged 28. However from 1856 to 1860 if he was married, his wife's (or wives') name(s) are unlikely to be given on the death certificate. If this is your Lachlan, then here's hoping that the informant knew the correct information to tell the registrar (parents' names, occupations and the like).

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Jan,
With such a long life, he may well have remarried. What was the wife's name on the death certificate?

Cheers,
Sarah

Hi Jan,

My interpretation of the certificate is:
  • Lachlan Grant, Shepherd, Widower of Ann Kennedy, Illegitimate
    1898, December First, 5h A.M., newtonmore, Kingnussie
    M; 95 years
    William Grant, Crofter, Deceased
    Mary Cattanach, Deceased
The decay of old age as cert by Walter de W______ MB ___ Edin.
    Ronald McPherson, Grandson
1898, December 3rd at Kingussie, J MacKenzie, Registrar
All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Jan:

The wife's name is Ann Kennedy, with illegitimate written below. I think that is referring to Lachlan, because his mother is listed by her surname without any reference to M.S. - maiden surname.

Lachlan Grant, Shepherd.
Widower of Ann Kennedy. Illegitimate.
1898 December First 5h. a.m.
Newtonmore, Kingussie.
Male 95 years
Parents: William Grant, Crofter. Deceased
May Cattanack. Deceased
Cause of death: The decay of old age.
Informant: Ronald McPherson, grandson.

Is there any way you can tie-in Ronald McPherson with your Lachlan?
