There is no head at Ancestry but I would think it's Margaret Crawford, sailor's wife. Here are their children -

Results for: All Countries
Father: James Crawford, Mother: Margaret Ogilvie

1. JAMES CRAWFORD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 27 SEP 1857 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
2. DAVID RENNIE CRAWFORD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 07 DEC 1859 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
3. ARCHIBALD MCNAIR CRAWFORD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 27 JAN 1864 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
4. WILLIAM CRAWFORD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 17 MAY 1862 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
5. JAMES CRAWFORD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 01 AUG 1857 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland

Apart from Margaret's children the rest are all visitors except Archibald McNair who's a boarder.
Isabella Rennie was born at Dunoon.

I also note David Rennie called one of his children James Crawford Rennie which is why I'm fairly sure this is his family.

But the question is - do I have the same David Rennie who was living with James and Janet Murray in 1841 and we also don't know waht the relationship was between them.
:?

Annette

I've been going round in circles trying to find a relationship between Mary Harvie Clark(e) and Mary Murray but I'm stumped as to how she could have been her biological grandmother.

I thought the key may lie with Jane Murray b 1844 as she was born at Dalserf and her siblings were Greenock.

Jane married James Hunter in 1868 giving her parents names as James Murray and Janet Rennie and here they are in 1881 -

James HUNTER 1 m M Cambuslang, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son
James MURRAY U 37 M Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland

Isabella's middle name is Davida (could this be after David Rennie and Isabella McNeilage?)

Jane's middle name is Robina and I believe the C may be for Clark or Currie after Jane Clarke who married Robert Currie.

All pure conjecture on my part.

I haven't found a death for Jane Murray/Hunter that looks plausible and I cannot find the family after 1881.

All this gets you no nearer to solving the mystery but I thought I'd post my thoughts in case anybody else can make sense of it.

Happy New Year,
:D
Annette

Thanks for the info on Jane!! :)

Looking back at the marriage of Janet Rennie and James Murray - the marriage is recorded at Greenock East and Dalserf.
James Murray, Ships Carpenter, in this Parish & Janet Rennie in the Parish of Dalserf, Proclaimed 29th February 1835
22 February James Murray of the East Parish of Greenock and Janet Rennie of this Parish.
Would the Parishes mentioned be their Parish of residence or birth?

Hi Caljam
Would the Parishes mentioned be their Parish of residence or birth?
Usually it is the parish of residence at the time (which for many folk would also be the parish of birth)

Best wishes
Lesley
