What does Home Economics mean these days in Scotland? When I was taking a class with that name (back in the late 60's in California) it was cooking for half the year and sewing the other half and was only for girls. The boys got to do wood shop during that time slot which annoyed me no end because I like making things out of wood! I believe now both classes are open to all.

30+ years ago  when I was Gary's age, all subjects were open to everyone. The days of boys only for the technical subjects and girls only for the domestic subjects had been outlawed. One friend of mine was at a school which actively promoted Home Economics for all 6th year pupils (final year, age 17 to 18) so that if they were going to be a student away from home that they didn't have to live solely on tins of baked beans.

All the best,

AndrewP

A very good idea! My daughter's boyfriend does all the cooking and hopes to become a professional chef and my younger son cooked me quite a good dinner for Mother's Day last week. The older son has been "into" cooking for years and did a lot of the cooking when they stayed with us last December.

I notice you don't mention the sewing part... Does anyone mend clothing any more? With all the tailors we seem to find in the old censuses, surely some of that skill has been passed down...

Regards,
Sarah

we dont do any sewing at all in home economics we do cooking once a week and writing for the rest do 1 period on cooking and 2 for writing and craft and design is where you use wood and metal and all the machiens and tools so they have sort of split them into two classes now and for sewing you have to take higher art in my school becaus u have to make a dress, mask or hat. i was wanting to be a professional chef but now i want to be a history teacher but i changed my mind and was thinking of carpentry lol.

Why not do them all? :D I bake bread, do genealogy research (i.e. history) and am currently building a house from scratch (heavy-duty carpentry). Find one of those that will bring in an income and you can do all the others on the side

Cheers,

Interesting ambitions Gary! Fortunately you don't have to make your mind up yet. What aspect of being like David Starkey appeals to you, hopefully not insulting school boys and calling them fat!! For those not in the UK the said David Starkey did this on telly recently. It's unusual to be sure what you want to do at 15 though I have to admit to knowing for certain when I was only 14 and despite a somewhat more varied career than I maybe envisaged never regretting it.

Keep cooking! My sons all cook better than their sister though she has decided to start now.

Hope all the rest of your exams go well.
