Hi Liz,
Who's working? I'm relaxing... :D
And yes, it was good to see you again, and meet new folk too.
All those Hotchkisses, and i've not got a single one in my own lines. :(
Cheers, Jack

Helen Hotchkiss Family

Post by KenS » Thu Aug 31, 2006 1:11 am

Hello Jack, long time since we last communicated. Haven't forgotten all the help I received from you and others in my own quests. Have come a long way since then. Spent some cash with ScotlandsPeople and learned much. Need to go back and spend some more for other family records.
Have been spending a great deal of time in recent months researching my wife's families. In her case and mine we have found some long lost cousins who are also very interested in family history.

Re: Helen's children Janet and Jane. I became aware of them only recently from Rex Hotchkiss but haven't taken time as yet to review their relationship to my family.

Thanks for checking in with me. Ken
This is a great site with so many caring people helping each other.

Hello Ken,
I think I understand from your previous posts that this is not your line, but in your local delvings, would you have come across any of the Stewarts who settled in your area in the mid-18th century? Seeing your location, I couldn't resist asking 8)
One of my biggest Scottish brick walls is Edward Hill Stewart, who was married in 1782 in Frederick County, Maryland. He was born around 1759-60. Stories conflict about whether he was born in Maryland, or came from Scotland as a small child (but I can't find any convincing record of his birth in Scotland).
Two of his children lived past 1880 and both report in the census that their father was born in Maryland (the family went to Ohio around 1810). A family tree, made by a descendant in 1917, says he was born in Edinburgh. This may be telescoping generations-- perhaps his father or grandfather came from Edinburgh, but in order to try to take the family back, I need to find the name of Edward Hill Stewart's parents... I have transcribed all the Stewart wills from the county, with no luck. There is an "insane" Benjamin Stewart, a Posey Stewart, an Alexander Stewart and a few others, but none with a proven connection to my ancestor.
I know this is a stretch... but since you live in the area you might have some idea of what sorts of records are available for that time period and if there is something obvious I have missed.
All the best,
Sarah

ScotlandsPeople lists the following in 1755 to 1765 for Ed* Stewart using Soundex for the last name.

Date Surname Forename Parent Names Sex Parish
13/09/1764 STEWART EDWARD EDWARD STEWART/MARTHA LANGWILL M CAMPBELTOWN
13/09/1764 STEWART EDWARD EDWARD STEWART/MARTHA LANGWILL M CAMPBELTOWN
23/11/1760 STODART EDWARD EDWARD STODART/JANE RUNCHAMAN U WHITEKIRK/ TYNNINGHAMEORDER

Just for fun I looked for Stewart children with a mother named Hill during a wider period and found this:

22/11/1789 STUART MARGARET DAVID STUART/MARGT. HILL U FORFAR

This list of Ed* St*r* might be useful as well:

Date Surname Forename Parent Names/Frame No. Sex Parish
03/09/1750 STEWART CHARLES EDWARD JOHN STEWART/AGNES GRAY M EDINBURGH
13/09/1767 STEWART EDMUND JOHN STEWART/MARJORY CONACHAR M LOGIERAIT

25/08/1754 STEWART EDWARD WILLIAM STEWART/MARY LANGWILL M CAMPBELTOWN
13/09/1764 STEWART EDWARD EDWARD STEWART/MARTHA LANGWILL M CAMPBELTOWN
13/09/1764 STEWART EDWARD EDWARD STEWART/MARTHA LANGWILL M CAMPBELTOWN
20/12/1751 STEWART JAMES FITZ EDWA CHARLES STEWART/ U CLUNIE
23/11/1760 STODART EDWARD EDWARD STODART/JANE RUNCHAMAN U WHITEKIRK/ TYNNINGHAME
28/01/1753 STUART EDWARD JOHN STUART/MARGARET EDWARD M KIRKLISTON

Of course, there is always my question in a related post, regarding a Hotchkiss/Stewart marriage.

Yes, I have wondered about Helen Hill before-- could she have been his grandmother? The naming pattern of his children doesn't help much either:

1st son: Mahlon (what kind of a name is this, anyway?)
2nd son: Adam (mother's father)
3rd Son: William
4th son: Jesse
5th son: Edward (father)

1st daughter: Nancy Ann (possibly mother's mother-- the Ann part anyway)
2nd daughter: Rebecca
3rd daughter: Susannah (mother)

Which, if he followed the rules (which he didn't completely-- even in the ones we know) means his father should have been Mahlon and his mother Rebecca. No luck there either. I am nearly 100% convinced that he was, in fact, born in Maryland, and I will have to look there before I can trace that line back to the immigrant.

Thanks for your interest!
Sarah
