I find it curious how fashion and usage change.

Sir Walter Scott was quite happy to describe himself as Scotch, and that usage for the person appears to have been quite normal, not in the least meant to be taken in a denigratory, derogatory or perjorative sense, up until the end of the 19th C, maybe even into the first decade or so of the 20th C, but, in the period since then the situation has been completely reversed, witness many of the strong reactions in this thread about using Scotch for people

I can only underline Tracey's reference to the thread at http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic. ... ght=scotch

Me? I'm 100% undiluted Scotch, back as far as I can go; and you can take that in any way that you like :!:

Dear, oh dear, oh dear..... :?
In the current issue of a popular UK based genealogical magazine, the Scottish census returns come under an article titled 'Census Overseas'!

Funny, the last time I crossed the border, I don't remember traversing any large stretch of water to get there........

My grandparents moving from Aberdeen to England scotched  our Scottishness.
I can only claim to be 100% British

Hi Lesley,

Yes, I thought they were kidding when I read it! I can't grumble too much though, I got a nice big mention in the top right corner of page 65 (Case Study 1)

I hope things aren't too wet and windy overseas?

Best,

Scott

Hi Scott
Now that I did spot - whilst reading bits here and there - "Crikes, I know him!" I thought, ....and then I meandered off on one of those thoughts that you do sometimes about how odd the internet is that there groups of people who you know, but you don't really..... :? :-k

Anyway - well done! =D> Good to see you there!
Best wishes
Lesley

Definitely 100% Scottish (and not Scotch under any situation!)
Have traced back more than 8 generations in parts on my tree and found only Scottish ancestors with exception of a few Irish.
Have been away from Scotland for 20 years yet will always be Scottish deep down. Although my children were not born in Scotland I do also educate them on the benefits of remaining Scottish at heart!

Ah! the Scots abroad....the blood is strong !!!

Home is where the heart is though. My Irish granny moved to Glasgow in her twenties and married a Banffshire Scot. Talk about chalk and cheese!
two totally different upbringings but a happy home. Her children and my generation are most definitely Scottish but have benefitted greatly by feeling part of both cultures.

Regards, Fergie.
