While I was working in Amsterdam, surrounded by all nationalities of fellow contract nerds, all of us Scots were told that no one could ever tell whether we were winding them up or not. The Chic Murray-like "dead-pan" totally confused them

I'll give you that David but one my favourites has to be his observation of the Edinburgh Scone ladies.....we've all got one of them in our family...or is it just me?as well as Billy Connelly (just try your best to ignore the superfluity of wee swearies, so that you appreciate how brilliant an observer he is of his fellow human beings, not least Glaswegians

Given his various peregrinations, perhaps I should have referred to not just one city in Scotland, but also all of Scotland, never mind beyond that, - the UK, Oz, NZ (including Stewart Island !), N America ....................Jockbird wrote:I'll give you that David but one my favourites has to be his observation of the Edinburgh Scone ladies.....we've all got one of them in our family...or is it just me?as well as Billy Connelly (just try your best to ignore the superfluity of wee swearies, so that you appreciate how brilliant an observer he is of his fellow human beings, not least Glaswegians

Iain
Hi Davie
My Dad was named Iain and born North Leith in 1932 - both parents from Edinburgh. He's the first Iain I've come across in my research - it seems my grandparents were the first generation to really break away from the traditional Scottish naming patterns.
Regards

According to one baby name site Ian is of Scottish origins and is a varient of John .Iain is however the the normal Scottish Gaelic spelling .
So I ask " who here has a normal scottish family and what does that mean?"

Haw Davie or is it the sweery word
I have only twa Ian's in the family line, my brother and a cousin both born in the 1950's. There is a long line of Johns on both sides going back a fair ways.

Got me curious so I had a wee look. On the 1841 census for Scotland there are a number of Heather's.Including 1 from 1796 in Lanark.
Happy Hunting,
