Hi Sarah,

I had been doing exactly that for both sites and have since tried again but still not finding them. Very strange

Thanks anyway.
Lizzie

Lizzie are you spelling McConnon correctly?

I searched for McConnan and it did not appear till I changed it to McConnon

Annette, you're right! How odd... I thought the version of soundex or whatever that the IGI uses would surely have no trouble with one vowel change. Makes you think that maybe sometimes we give up too easily, thinking for sure that the variants will be covered :?

Sarah

Same here Lizzie that's why I wondered if you were doing the it too. You know what they say - great minds think alike.

Sarah,
I was really surprised that the IGI didn't 'hear' the two spellings the same.

McConnon/Gracie Conundrum

Post by LizzieS » Mon Oct 13, 2008 6:30 pm

Hi All,
I've picked up this problem again :!:
I had an OPR birth record 1799 for Katherine McConnon about the right age and this indicated she was the natural daughter of John McConnon and Jean Kerr of East Morton.
So, on a recent visit to Dumfries-shire, I looked up the Kirk Sessions records and found their confession. In the record it states that John is Jean's servant.
I wondered therefore if she might be widowed.
Can anyone tell me if its likely that her maiden name would have been used in such a record?
If so perhaps she had been married to a Gracie
Certainly I have found a Robert Gracie and Jean Kerr producing children at East Morton in the period 1781 - 1791 so its a possibility.
Any thoughts?
Lizzie

Hi Lizzie,
Very interesting! Yes, I would think that her maiden name would be the one used. So possibly she was married to the Gracie who ran the farm and she employed a handsome McConnon... Great story!

Best wishes,
Sarah
