I agree with Andrew's interpretation.

So this Lachlan has several counts against him: wrong place, wrong occupation and wrong wife! I guess he's not our man :( The thing to do is probably to creep forward with this family census by census and see when Lachlan, father of many Donalds, actually disappears from the record. I think I have him through 1881 in Strath, then he is gone by 1891. But I'm too sleepy to follow this through at the moment [snore]
Perhaps someone in another time zone will carry on!

Good night,
Sarah

Hi All
I agree with Andrew's & Sarah
I have got the wrong Lachlan
Mine was married twice to a Hellen and then to a Margaret (Peggy)and got some info that he was still alive in 1871 but i think he died before 1891
thanks to everyone that helped me
Cheers Jan

Hello Jan,

Sorry the Lachlan Grant's, death was not your Lachlan.

The 1881. census for Lachlan, that you found was that the one for Strath, Inverness, where he is 84 years, of age a Fisherman, and living with son Donald Grant, and family. thats the census i was going by.

If that is your Lachlan Grant, then you would think that he would have died in Strath, as he seems to have lived there all his life.

The problem is there is no other death for a Lachlan Grant, in that area, using all sorts of wildcards, up until 1908, there is a 80 year old, but its very unlikely this one is him the age is over twenty years out.

Its possible the index for his death has been omitted from Scotlandspeople, by human error, its happened before.

Regards,
Jonn.

Jan
I have this family in my tree. Lachie and Peggy's daughter Helen married Alexander Finlayson and was my aunt's "grandmother in law"!
Need to go out just now but I'll have a look to see what I have on them.
They did live on the Island of Scalpay just across from Dunan, near Broadford.

I don't know whether I'm missing something here and I'm being silly but I did the following search on SP and got one hit:

Deaths 1881 - 1891
Gra*
Lachl*n
Born 1803 +/- 3
Inverness All districts

Unfortunately I don't have any credits to check this and as I say I'm probably wildly wrong!

Just waiting for someone to tell me I am
Meg
Main family lines are Harpers from Midlothian, Fife & Kinross-shire, and Dobies/Dobbies from Midlothian. Also Strathearn, Stobie, Layden and Downie.

Hi Meg
Playing around with the search, it is still showing as Lachlan Grant and the area seems to be Sleat.
which is next door to Strath..... ! :D

Best wishes
Lesley
