Peter and Alan,
Two more details. First, I have a copy of the birth certificate of Galfridus Reginald James Crawfurd, born on Sept 26th 1867, at 6 Park Place West, Regent's Park, Pancras. London [for furriners, that is in NW London ]. He was the son of Robert Crawfurd, Gentleman, and Ann Crawfurd, formerly Higgins, and the birth was registered on Nov 6th 1867 in the District of Pancras, Sub-district of The Regent's Park. We now have a wife for Robert [2]. I haven't yet looked up the relevant marriage entries, but it doesn't seem to be one of the ones we have so far considered. It looks as if Robert [2] must have married late and after he had retired from military service.
I have followed up Peter's lead for a possible daughter for Galfridus Malcolm's daughter but it came to a dead end, so we are nwo looknig for a Judith A Crawfurd.

Alan,
My apologies. I had overlooked the Ann Higgins you had found as one of the possible spouses for the Robert Crawfurd who was married in Newcastle in 1863. All the births fit in well but not the death of the Robert Crawfurd who died aged 81 at Pancras in 1883. His year of birth was 1816, which would have made him only 67 in that year. Raymond

Sorry, me again. I am pretty sure that the Robert Crawfurd who died in 1883 aged 81 was my great-great-grandfather, the owner of Saint Hill, and husband of Georgina Laetitia Garrow. He was born in 1801 and died in 1883 in Gordon Square which is in the district of St. Pancras, so I think that rules out this RObert as the one we are interested in. Raymond

Hello Peter and Raymond,

The most likely death appears to be the one who died 1876, age 60.

Deaths Sep 1876
Crawfurd Robert 60 Brentford 3a47

That would partly explain the fragmentation of the family in 1881. Perhaps his wife Ann was also deceased by then. Finding a death for her may be difficult especially if it’s been indexed under Crawford. You probably won’t be able to resolve all these matters satisfactorily without accessing the available census material as mentioned earlier. If the family is together in 1871 her age and place of birth should be on the census document and that should make tracking her easier.

Fiddling around with the search here I don’t seem to be getting anywhere except that Aunt Frances appears to be in Middlesex in 1871. http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=7619

All the best,
Alan

My lead to Emma Crawfurd who married George Walker led nowhere. I should be able to get hold of a copy of the Will of Galfridus Reginald through the National Probate Index. I didn't have time to finish the search today but found nothing between 1911, when he appears in the Census as living in Kingston, and 1924. If I can trace it, it should give us some information on the rest of his family. Peter, is there any chance that , in the next day or two, you could find the contact that Jessica made? It is because I have a Skype conference with the ExComm of the Clan Association on Saturday evening and we will be talking about the Newfield Crawfurds. If you can, I would be most grateful. Raymond

Hi Raymond,

Sorry, Jessica and I are stumped. The frustrating thing is that I have hand-written notes given to Jessica by the woman that she met in England but they are unsigned. She seemed to know a good deal about Robert (2) and his offspring. Who and where can she be?

I have been unable to connect with the Agassiz family who are connected to all this through my great aunt Rhoda nee Bagshawe, daughter of Frances Ann Crawford, and grand-daughter of Robert (2).

I will keep on with this and post as new information comes to light.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Raymond and Alan

One door closes, another opens. I just found a second cousin (great-granddaugher of Frances Ann), one of three children, who has been doing some work on the Crawfurd tree. I have offered to collaborate with her and will keep you posted.

Cheers,

Peter
