According to an article in The Times, Saturday, Dec 06, 1919, Daisy’s sister, Angela, wrote a book at the age of eight called “The Jellous Governess”. Angela was now married and living in Southampton. Their books can be read online http://www.archive.org/search.php?query ... pe%3Atexts
This looks a likely marriage for Angela Ashford. Use the same trick and you’ll find five possible births.

There was a book published 1984 called “Daisy Ashford: her life” written by R. M. Malcomson. The book appears to contain much information about Daisy’s mother and grandmother and the Walker family. Hopefully you’ll see a snippet here with Emma Crawford at the head of the family tree. http://books.google.com.au/books?ei=7Y3 ... rch_anchor
“George's widow had every inducement to remain single — the use of Eastwood Hall during Tom's minority and a handsome allowance which would be withheld if she remarried. The children were free of their father's disapproving presence and could give full rein to their natural high spirits. Tom was sent to Eton and Emma was educated at home, and grew up to be strong and independent, with a love of riding and with her mother's cheerful disregard for economy. Her appearance was striking. She had thick, dark hair, very long and fine, and dark brown eyes, and although she was never beautiful like her mother, she was extremely attractive to men and retained all her life an irresistible vitality and humour ……….”

Dear Peter and Alan,
Many thanks. There was a Daisy Ashford who as an old lady lived in Tenterden, my home town - I must find out more. I am delighted that you have found another contact, Peter. I am seriously interested in finding any living Craufurds from your family. I will let you know how I get on with the Galfridi. Raymond

Dear Alan and Raymond,
Great details Alan!
My dad's cousin Frances (one of the many grand-daughters of Francis Ann Crawfurd) spoke to me about Daisy and her hugely popular book. Knowing the link is quite wonderful. I really appreciate all the work you too are doing. I am very glad I stumbled over TalkingScot!
I hope sometime that both of you will visit my fair city. You are guaranteed the true Crawfurd welcome!
Cheers,
Peter

Re: KENNET(H) Dundonald area abt 1750's.....
Hi Alan and Raymond,'
By way of confirmation, this is, I think, where we stand. If either of you would be good enough to let me know if anything I mention is already been settled, I would much appreciate it.
So here we are. My first priority is to see if I can rediscover Ms. J. A. Crawfurd, Galfridus Malcolm's daughter. In her brief note that she gave Jessica, she writes that Galfridus Malcolm had a sister who died without issue. What she doesn't say is whether she, herself, had any siblings. So there we are on that one.
With regard to Robert (3) it would be nice to document his five children. The two boys who were killed in World War 1 are completely unknown to me. This is somewhat odd in that the Frances Ann Crawfurd had two sons serving in the War (both survived although Noel was gassed) and Frances Ann's son-in-law (my grandfather Cowley) served in France. One would think there would be a picture or a mention somewhere, but...nothing. Robert (3) also had three daughters of which I know nothing. So Robert (3) will be my second focus.
Finally, I'll also see what needs to be done or can be done about Robert (2)'s fourth child, the young lady that has been the subject of discussion in earlier posts.
Thanks for adding so much to my knowledge of the Crawfurds and the branch to which I belong.
Cheers,
Peter

Re: KENNET(H) Dundonald area abt 1750's.....
Dear Peter & Alan. Just to confirm a few details from 192.com. Galfridus Malcolm C Crawfurd married Ethel C Ingram at Kingston in the 2nd quarter of 1933, and they had a daughter <Name, place and quarter of birth removed as it is well past the 1909 cut-off date> . I can find no other births recorded for them in England up to the end of 1945. Peter, was it actually Judith that Jessica met when she came to England, and if so where did the meeting take place? It might help me to track her down . Raymond

Hello Raymond and Peter,
It’s best not to discuss Judith or any other likely to be living person by name on a public forum. She may well be reading this and be feeling threatened that someone is trying to track her down, especially if she has no wish to be involved. It’s safer to discuss such recent events between yourselves by using the Private Message facility. When you are logged on you’ll see a PM button within the area of a post made by the person you wish to contact.
On FreeBMD there’s a lot of Crawfurd activity in the District of Kingston. These appear to be the births of the children of Robert (3).

I can’t see any marriages for the girls under the Crawfurd name. They probably should be there if they married at an average age. The database is of course not yet complete. Looking at the death index here it’s looking as though at least Winifred and Jean died unmarried. http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=7579

Re: KENNET(H) Dundonald area abt 1750's.....
Dear Alan
Thanks for all this information on Robert which all fits with that from my anonymous family source. From that source, we learn that only daughter who married died without issue.
I almost feel as if I should ask you a question that I am certain cannot be answered, just to be astonished when you come back with an answer in just a few minutes!
OK, how about the mysterious second daughter of Robert (2)? Any more news on that front? I'll expect an avalanche of info before lunch time (4 hours away here in GMT-8)!
Again, thanks for lending all considerable resources to the cause.
Cheers,
Peter

Re: KENNET(H) Dundonald area abt 1750's.....
Well Peter, I don’t think I made the deadline.
You’re talking about the mysterious second daughter of Robert Crawfurd (2) who may well be the Mary V Crawford who appears on the 1881 English Census living with Robert’s (2) sister Frances (Fanny) and his two sons and who is recorded as being Fanny’s niece.
Dwelling Mortimer Villa Strawberry Hill Rd
Census Place Twickenham, Middlesex, England
Family History Library Film 1341326
Public Records Office Reference RG11
Piece / Folio 1343 / 17
Page Number 27
Francis CRAWFORD Head U Female 66 Scotland None
Robert CRAWFORD Nephew U Male 17 Northumberland, England Clerk at Bank
Galfrittus CRAWFORD Nephew U Male 13 London, London, Middlesex, England Scholar
Mary V. CRAWFORD Niece Female 7 Scotland
PLUS 2 Servants
Barring accidents that would give Mary V. Crawford or Crawfurd a birth year of 1873 or 1874. She’s supposed to have been born in Scotland at a time when Robert (2) and presumably his wife appeared to have been based somewhere around London.
Robert Crawfurd’s (2) wife’s name was Ann Higgins. If I’m doing this correctly there appears to be a death in Scotland in 1873 for an Annie Crawfurd, other name Higgins, at age 26, in Ayrshire. I really couldn’t resist a look at this one and my eyes read it as follows:
Death of Annie Crawfurd, wife of Robert Crawfurd, Colonel, Queen’s Brigade. Died 10th October, 1873 at Marchfield Cottage, Newton Parish, age 26 years. Father, William Higgins, merchant, deceased. Mother, Helen Higgins, maiden surname Constable. Death caused by Black Bile, 4 days, certified by John Ronald, Surgeon, Ayr. Informant was the undertaker. Registered 3 October, 1873, at St. Quivox, County of Ayr.
“At Marchfield Cottage, Prestwick, October 10th, ANNIE, wife of Colonel R. Crawford. (Shetland Times 27/10/1873)” http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/rea ... 1067164884
The Queen’s Brigade appears to have been a Volunteer Regiment which would be consistent with his previous activities. Maybe it’s the Edinburgh based Queen’s Rifle Volunteer Brigade. Cause of death ‘Black bile’ appears to have been Melancholia.
I think you mentioned previously that Aunt Frances went to Canada with the Bagshawes in the 1890s. At AncestorsOnBoard http://www.ancestorsonboard.com/ there appears to be a voyage to Canada in 1890 where there were Crawfords and Bagshawes on board. I can’t tell anything for certain here as I can’t see the images. There appear to be no initials except for a couple of them and no ages recorded.

Did the Bagshawes etc go to Canada in 1890 to Montreal? Did they bring two Bagshawe children with them? Maybe Edward used his middle name, Charles? Could the second Crawford, initial V, have been Mary V? You would have to view the image to know if any of this makes any sense.
If they left in 1890 then they would have missed the 1891 UK census but would have arrived in time for the Canadian one. Have you seen the 1891 Canadian Census for the family to see who actually arrived in Canada? If the possible second daughter went with them she would have been only age 16 and Canadian records may provide some clues as to her parentage.

You’re talking about the mysterious second daughter of Robert Crawfurd (2) who may well be the Mary V Crawford who appears on the 1881 English Census living with Robert’s (2) sister Frances (Fanny) and his two sons and who is recorded as being Fanny’s niece.

Re: KENNET(H) Dundonald area abt 1750's.....
Hi Alan
OK, so you didn't make it by lunchtime, but it was sitting there waiting for me when I came home after an early dinner with friends. Now I can pry myself away from this stuff to get some sleep!
The 1901 Census of Vancouver Island shows the Bagshawe family happily living on Richardson St. in Victoria BC (actual address is likely 1034). They called the home Swallowfield after something in England no doubt.
Here is the who's who from:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~canbc ... d06p04.htm
Richardson St
06/05/29 Bagshaw, Edward, m, head, m, 15 Mar 1866, 35, ENG, to Can: 1884, CE, Insurance agt.
06/05/30 Bagshaw, Francais, f, wife, m, 14 Dec 1864, 36, ENG, to Can: 1884, CE.
06/05/31 Bagshaw, Charles V., m, son, s, 28 Apr 1889, 11, MB, CE.
06/05/32 Bagshaw, Sybil F., f, dau, s, 26 Apr 1890, 10, ENG, to Can: 1890, CE.
06/05/33 Bagshaw, Emma L., f, dau, s, 15 May 1891, 9, MB, CE.
06/05/34 Bagshaw, Elfreda M., f, dau, s, 5 Nov 1892, 8, MB, CE.
06/05/35 Bagshaw, Noel E., m, son, s, 25 Dec 1893, 7, MB, CE.
06/05/36 Bagshaw, Doris M., f, dau, s, 30 Oct 1895, 5, MB, CE.
06/05/37 Bagshaw, Ethel M., f, dau, s, 30 Jun 1897, 4, MB, CE.
06/05/38 Bagshaw, Sislia L., f, dau, s, 4 Jul 1899, 2, BC, CE.
06/05/39 Bagshaw, Rhoda, f, dau, s, 4 Nov 1900, 0, BC, CE.
……Rems: BRI: name entered as Rhoda Victoria Bagshawe.
06/05/40 Fairfield, Mary, f, nurse, s, 25 Oct 1840, 60, IRL, to Can: 1892, CE, Nurse.
Frances Ann has become Francais, but beyond that, all the spelling is fine. Frances Crawfurd who came with them is apparently now dead. There is no sign of any other Crawfurd family members. Interestingly, I hadn't noticed before that Edward and Frances came to Canada first in 1884 got as far Manitoba, had Charles Vivian their first born and then headed back to England to have their second child, my dearly beloved Granny Sybil. According to your passenger list, they returned to Manitoba with Aunt Fanny Crawfurd (Robert (1)'s sister Frances) and the two kids along with the mysterious Crawfurd female unknown. Aunt Fanny died in 1901 apparently before the census. What happened to that final passenger and who, indeed was she?
Granny Sybil would have been thrilled that all this family history is finally being documented. She loved it and she loved referring to the Lords Bolton "Billy" and Billy, Junior etc.
PS: I have a nice etching of the Swallowfield house that I must scan one day.
Wonderful stuff.
I look at your other chapters tomorrow.
OK, I'll just add one bit more:
By my arithmetic, according to your info, Robert married Ann when he was 31 and she was just 16. They married (if the records are right about the same time as Robert (3) was born. This sounds like a bit of a scandal! I'm glad the shotguns were loaded when the Higgins family demanded to know if Robert intended to married the girl. If he hadn't, my history would have been a whole lot shorter!
So, what happened to MV......OK, I've got to get some rest. I cannot remember anything now.
Cheers,
Yawn,
Peter
Still more and this is the last!
In the 1891 Canadian census in Manitoba (Census district: Marquette, Census sub-district: Miniota) the follow Crawfords (no Crawfurds) and Bagshaws (no Bagshawes) were present and accounted for:
Charles R D (this is assuredly C. R. V. Bagshawe, Frances Ann and ECB Bagshawe's first child, my great-uncle Vivian who danced with Elizabeth the Queen Mother when she and George VI visited Victoria in 1937). His age is given as 1 which is a little off.
Edward C C 25 years old. That's daddy (ECB)
Frances A 26 years old. That's mommy.
Sybil F 1 1/2 years old. That's me granny.
Frances Crawford 70 years old OK she lied about her age to the tune of maybe 7 years. This must be Aunt Fanny.
JULIA L CRAWFORD ! 19 years old. As in JULIA LETITIA (NAMED AFTER THE AUNTIES) MAY VIOLET CRAWFURD. The inferred birth date look pretty good.
as well as
James Crawford 37 years old and Olive Crawfurd 19 years old neither of whom were on the boat.
So JLMV Crawfurd leaves the family before they head off to Victoria and Frances (Aunt Fanny) dies and when the 1901 census is taken both are no longer with the family.
Yea!
Goodnight all.

Re: KENNET(H) Dundonald area abt 1750's.....
Hello all,
Here is my two cents over morning coffee:
1) although the list is in alphabetical order so the Bagshawes and the Crawfords are not next to each other, the ticket numbers are adjacent. Bagshawes on ticket No. 4405 and Crawfords on 4404.
2) Mr. Bagshawe's first initial could be E. It is not quite like the other capital Cs on the page. He and Mrs Bagshawe are both married and one assumes to each other.
3) The "Two children" are both between 1 and 12, one is a boy and one is a girl. The two Miss Crawfords are both over 12 and single.
They are all headed for "Quebec or Montreal".
Miniota, Marquette, Manitoba
Bagshaw, Edward C C, 25, born England, Farmer
Bagshaw, Frances A, 26, born England
Charles R V, 1, born Manitoba
Bagshaw, Sybil F, 10/12, born England
Crawford, Frances, 70, Aunt, born Scotland
Crawford, Julia L.M.V., 17, Sister, born Scotland
All the best,
Sarah
Edit: I see Peter has added this last census while I was copying the info!
