Pettigrew Wall in Scotland
Hi,
I am looking for any information on Alexander Pettigrew b about 1801 in Scotland. Family history says he emigrated to Canada from Scotland on the ship "The Waxford" in 1841 with his wife Mary Winham (Wenham)b 1801? England, and children:
Daniel(adopted) b 25 Dec 1826 Glasgow; d 14 March 1853 NYS USA
James b 1830? Scotland; d 6 Dec 1906 Boston MA USA
William Alexander b 5 Nov 1835 Edinburgh; d 24 Sept 1927 New York USA
Mary b 14 March 1841 Edinburgh; d 4 march 1925 NYS USA
I joined Ancestry worldwide to search UK records and Scotlandspeople and found the family in the 1841 Scotland census( Petticrew not Pettigrew). This is the information on Mary or Margaret the mother:
Name: Margt Petticrew
Age: 40
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1801
Gender: Female
Where born: England
Civil Parish: Gorbals
County: Lanarkshire
Address: Puddockrow
Parish Number: 644/2
In the 1851 census for Canada Margt (Mary) is listed under Pettygrew with some of the children but not the father Alexander. And her maiden name is listed there as Wenham. I have since found out that the ship might be the "Margaret of Wexford"???
Can anyone help? Or point me in the right direction? Thanks so much

Hi Karen,
You've probably already seen this, but, I'm looking at an 1851 Quebec census which I hope is the same family!! There is Mary with the children (and also an Alexander 6 yrs old b. Quebec).
On the rest of the page is a squiggly line joining the other spouses, but there is an "M" or "W" beside Mary's. Do you think she could be widowed by this time? So Alexander could have died in Canada?
Hope this helps a little!
Nadine

Thank you for the quick responses! Yes, I knew Alexander was listed in the 1841 Scotland census. He was with the family as they traveled to Canada.
But he is not on the 1851 Canada census so I am trying to find death record for him there. A son Alexander was born in Canada and was baptized there in 1849 along with the daughter Mary Harriet who was born in 1841 in Scotland. At the baptism the father Alexander was not listed as a witness so I am thinking he was dead at that time.
I did not know about the suiggley mark on the census but that makes sense since I think he is dead by that time.
I wonder how I can find any earlier information on Alexander b 1801. Nothing I have searched seems to match.
Thanks again.

Hello again.
Found this interesting marriage.
Was Alexander's wife named Mary or Margaret?
ALEXANDER PETTIGREW
Male
Marriages:
Spouse: MARY WHIAM
Marriage: 20 FEB 1842 Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland
Remember too that ages in the 1841 census are rounded down to the nearest 5 so Alexander could have been born anytime between 1801 and 1804.
Regards,
Annette M
Later..........I wonder if Mary was his second wife and the older children are from a previous marriage?

Annette, thanks so much for this info. Yes the wife of Alexander iwas Mary or Margaret Wenham so this could be a possibilty!!!
My problem is that family history says they left Scotland in 1841? And now a marriage there in 1842??? Very interesting. Will have to do some more searching!!!! Thanks again.

Can't be your Alexander if he left in 1841. Perhaps a relative?
I just thought the female name was too close to ignore but could be a total coincidence. You could view the actual image on Scotlands People but quite honestly I don't think it would be worth it as I don't think it will tell you anything more.
regards,
Annette M
