No Such Name in Scotland

Hi All

I was looking at the 1866 Death Cert. for a relative and noticed that the informant was a niece-in-law. She signed her name Isabella Doldie. Her signature and spelling looked very clear to me. When I tried to trace Isaballa Doldie I had no luck at all. In all of SP there is not one name listed as Doldie, Isabella or otherwise.

There are a 3 Daldies on the 1841 census, but no apparant relation.

Has anyone ever heard of such a name as Doldie?

Hi Sheila

The closest name I have come across is Goldie. Quite a few of them.

Could you post the certificate to see if it may be just a flowery script. Then we can all take a guess at it.

For my 2c worth I agree with Russell. Just look at the "D" in McDonald in the previous block and compare it to the first letter of Isabella's surname.
Its not a "D"

Hi Sheila,

I would stick with Doldie. Unfortunately comparing the signature with the other handwriting on the certificate is futile. The signature is made by the informant, not the registrar, so only her name is in that handwriting.

As much as I feel it should say Goldie, I cannot see that first letter as a G.

This image has the unfortunate characteristic of blurring when you try to enlarge it.

Another option could be Toddie. There are a few of these on SP.

None of my usual dodges to enhance an image worked this time. Most frustrating.

Couldn't find any Doldies on FreeBDM, Ancestry UK, ScotlandsPeople, or WorldConnect.

London Times 14 June 1920 – a list of Golf scores, Burhill Ladies, Mrs Doldie.

Ancestry apparently has 1 family named Doldie living US ie NY State 1920.

Have found several dogs named Doldie

Scotsman search gives 38 hits for Doldie – I don’t have access.
A group of a half dozen major historical US newspapers including NY Times gives 46 hits for Doldie – haven’t looked at these but more than likely most if not all the newspaper hits are OCR misreadings (but you never know)

Various Australian sites – not a single Doldie.

a search of GenesReunited brings up just one Doldie born 1964 – a typo?

Edinburgh Gazette, 24 Jan, 1905 – notice of a creditors meeting regarding the estate of a Mr Robertson, Farmer and Grazier, Brewlands, Coldrach, and Doldie, Glenisla – if that’s a place you would think the Doldies came from Doldie, but where do they hide?

And on this site, under Debenham theres a reference to the Will of a Mr Doldie so it would be fair to think that Doldie is a real name.

The more I look at Doldie the more it looks like a completely normal name not one you would particularly comment on as being unusual.

Hi All

Heather, I would like to thank you for posting the image to the gallery. I would also like to thank everyone else for their input.

If the name is really Doldie, there should have been some reference to it on SP, especially after 1855. It could be Goldie or Toddie. I will search for both.

Maybe it is one of those names that changes the spelling with time. Even if it is you would suppose that Isabella would know how to spell her own name properly.
