on scotlandspeople i found the birth certificate of agnes twedley born 1886.from this i found her parents- samuel twedley and agnes rate . they married on 21 may 1880 wishaw and samuels age is given as 24 years. his parents are named as peter tweedley & margaret george.
i cannot find samuels birth certificate on the statutory or OPR records. i've used numerous spellings and wildcards.
can anyone please help me locate samuel.

I would have a look at the 1881 Census to see what Samuel birthplace is.
I would also look at George births in case he was born before his parents married.

thank you for your help. this is definately the right samuel in the 1881 census. i also found him living with his parents at galston in the 1871 census aged 16 and a coalminer.again his birth place is given as lanarkshire. BUT i still can't find a birth certificate even tried the surname george incase he was illegitimate.do you think his birth may not have been registered?

No luck for me poking around IGI or SP using variations of spelling.

I did wonder if perhaps, his given name may have been the Gaelic form of Samuel, but I don't know what that would be.

Given that it's not a really common name, I tried searching SP with Soundex on: Tweedley - male - b 1855-57 - 49 results - may be worth the SP credits to print up those two pages?

Included in the above 49 results are 2 Tweedly males born 1855-57, one of whom was born in 1856.

thanks for your help. i have been searching for samuel's birth all day. still not located him. i even looked for his death but no joy there. the only good news is i found him and his wife agnes on ellisisland. they travel from glasgow to NY on 6th june 1901.

Hello margmo

I tried unsuccessfully to reply yesterday, here it is again.

Samuel G Tweedley was born 31 October 1855 in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire and died 12 April 1929 in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA.

I received this from his grandson (now deceased)

He is not related to me, but if I could find his or my Irish ancestors he may be, I live in hope.

To find more information about the family, type "Patricks People" into Google and look for Rate Agnes, it easier than looking for Samuel.

Agnes Rate was also known as Agnes Rait.
