I can't find Edward on the 1891 census

Post by Mo-anne » Sun Sep 16, 2007 11:12 am

Edward James Hartenstein married Margaret Riddle on 9 th august 1895 in Glasgow and lived in Glasgow until his death in 1939. Edward was born on 18th Nov 1862 in Southwark, England. I have traced Edward up to 1881 (census) when he and his recently widowed mother were living with his married sister and her husband in London (Frances and Louis Ferrey.) I cannot find any trace of Edward on the 1891 census in England or Scotland. I know he changed his name to Hart but not till 1911 - on his marriage certificate iin 1895 it's given as Hartenstein. Any ideas ?

Thanks Mo-anne

Hi Mo-anne,

I don't see any sign of him in 1891. I see what I presume to be the mother, a retired hat manufacturer, living in Bexhill, Sussex (England), not with any of her family.

All the best,

Hello Mo-anne,

He’s on 1901 as Hartenstein as well.

Even if he changed his name officially in 1911 (Was it by deed poll or similar?) he may well have been using the name Hart for many years beforehand (and that practice was probably fairly common).

He may have reverted to Hartenstein only for official purposes, such as a marriage, and maybe only when he thought of it for things considered to be not quite so important, such as a census.

Maybe he was Hart in 1891. There appears to be a 27yo Edward Hart living Lanarkshire in 1891 on SP.

Just a thought,
Alan

Thanks - it hadn't occurred to me he might have used his shortened name at different times . I'm not sure how he changed his name -it was in the Glasgow press in 1911- but it was allegedly done to stop his sons being bullied at school because of their German sounding name in the run-up to the WWI .
Thanks for tip.
