While researching my Boyd family, I found a William Boyd married to Euphemia Duncan (1870), so then looked at the ancestry of Euphemia. She was born in 1832 in Dysart, Fife - parents given as Mary Michie and James Duncan. The marriage certificate gave Mary as Marion, and siblings found on the IGI also gave the mother as Marion. I found births for a number of children 1814 - 1832 and one more in 1841 viz
Marion Duncan Birth 3 Aug 1841 Christening 8 Nov 1841, Dysart, Fife, Scotland Father James Duncan Mother Marion Michie
C119513 1820-1843 1040195
This one was a little strange as - she is not with the family in 1851, there is an earlier daughter Marion born 1814 and from the census mother Marion would be over 50 in 1841. (51 based on age at death)
As luck would have it, Marion the mother died in 1855, and on the children listed Marion born 1841 is not mentioned.
My question - is there anyway I can prove this child did/did not belong to my family. Could she have been a grandchild? Would the OPR image provide any clues? I do have a parish record from Staffordshire where the vicar recorded the grandparents instead of the parents when baptising a child.

Hi Trish
Marion Duncan born 1841 as found on the IGI - was this an extracted record or a submission?
So far I haven't found a Marion Duncan born to James Duncan and Mary Michie in Dysart around 1841.
On Ancestry in the 1861 census I have found a Marion Duncan born in Dysart about 1842 so aged 19 - parents are Alexander and Jane Duncan.
On the 1851 census Alexander and Jane Duncan have a daughter called Marisa aged 9. Could this be the Marion from the 1861 census transcribed wrongly?
If the IGI record was a submission, then it should be treated with caution, as I'm sure you already know.
The other possibility if James and Mary Duncan did have a child Marion in 1841 then could she have died before 1851?
My great-great-grandfather had 2 daughters who died in the early 1850s and I've yet to find death certificates for them - this was before the statutory regulations came in. I know the dates of their deaths, because I was fortunate enough to find the family grave where they are all buried. Otherwise, that would be another of my brick walls!
Don't know if this is of any help?
k If you want anymore details on Alexander and Jane then let me know and I'll happily provide them.
Best wishes
Claudette

Hi Claudette
Your answer sent me back to the IGI in a rush because I had thought it was an extracted entry - as were the others - but the other interesting piece of information was your information that a Marion b. 1842 belonged to Alexander and Jane Duncan. Alexander was a son of James Duncan and Marion Michie on the death certificate for Marion - and is the only one that didn't appear on the IGI. It is starting to look very much like the error that occurred with my family in Staffordshire - but I will check it all further and let you know. Many thanks for your reply

This is the Extracted record on the IGI
MARION DUNCAN Birth: 03 AUG 1841 Christening: 08 NOV 1841 Dysart, Fife, Scotland
Father: JAMES DUNCAN Mother: MARION MICHIE
C119513 1820 - 1843 1040195
There is also a separate IGI extracted record for Marion Duncan born 3 October 1841 - same film, different batch - parents Alexander Duncan and Jane Philp.
Spending 1 credit on SP shows me both these records as well.
I think I am going to have to check the film at the LDS as I doubt buying the individual baptisms will be of much use. If one of the children had died shortly after birth, this is usually (not always) recorded on the IGI - so she may have died a little later or I may never find out if it was a mistake.
I have access to the census, so many thanks for the offer on the detail but I can find same - I will no doubt start checking to see if Alexander is my missing son
It seems most likely.
Thanks again
Trish
