Margaret & Catherine Reid

Post by Merlot » Thu Oct 11, 2007 3:57 pm

Hello All,

I'm hoping someone can help me find my granny & g granny on the 1891/1901 census.

Margaret Reid b. 73 Brown St, Glasgow, 25.4.1887, illegitimate, daughter of Catherine Reid, Powerloom weaver.

When Margaret Reid marries Robert W. Cameron in 1909 at 17 Coalhill Street, Catherine Reid is deceased.

I have looked on the 1891/1901 for them. I have tried to match the GROS data numbers for Margaret & Catherine, zilch, nada, nowt!
I have also looked for Kate Reid.
I have tried deaths for Catherine/Kate hoping that Margaret would have signed as the informant, still nothing.
Can someone spot something I've missed or is it a case of [alien] or that I have too little information and should give up on this?

Cheers,
Merlot

Hi Merlot

Have you checked out any of the following:

Margaret Reid aged 4 born Glasgow 240 Gallowgate Street

Granddaughter

Other household members
Margaret Reid 70 Head
Mary Reid 35 Tobacco Spinner
William Reid 31 Foundry Labourer
Margaret Armstrong 28 Boarder Cotton Weaver

Margaret Reid 3 born Glasgow 24 Kirkpatrick Street, Camlachie, Granddaughter

Other household members

Catherine Reid Head 72 born Ireland
James Reid Son 33 Mason
Matilda Reid Daur 30 Darner

Maggie Reid 4 Sister in Law 91 Yorkhill Street

Other household members

James Robertson 32 Storekeeper
Agnes Robertson 25 Wife Tailoress
Mrs Reid 47 Mother in Law Ireland

Maggie P Reid 4 Granddaughter born Glasgow Evelix Dornoch

In the household of Jessie Forbes aged 62.

Do you have any info on Catherine's date or place of birth at all otherwise she might be impossible to find as she could have died or married shortly after little Margaret was born so may not appear in the 1891 census as Catherine Reid.

Merlot,

I looked around a bit, but you're right that they're elusive. The only possibility I found in 1901 for Margaret Reid shows her working as a domestic servant, living with a family of Drummonds in Cathcart, born in Glasgow. Could that be her?

Forget the sister in law one. Agnes's mum is Elizabeth Reid m.s. Millar.

Hi AnneM & kathyc,

Thanks for having a look at this for me.

I searched for Margaret Reid aged 3-4yrs then for Catherine and looked to see if any GROS data matched. The only way I have of identifying them would be to have them in a house together or Catherine in service and Margaret with relatives (even then it would be difficult to prove they were mine).I have looked at loads of houses in the Bridgeton/Camlachie/Calton area and have come up with nothing.
With no father and Catherine Reid, Powerloom Weaver as the only information I have it’s not looking good.

I did find a Catherine Reid who died at 17 Coalhill Street in 1906, I thought I’d cracked it, however, she had married a Mr John Nixon in 1866.

Have you looked for a poor law application for Catherine about the time that Margaret was born?

That sounds like a good idea Anne.

There is this Catherine Reid in Brown street in 1881 but because her mother's name is Sarah maybe not.

Hi,

At least I now know I've not missed something obvious. I'll have to get some time off work and get up to the Mitchell to check the Poor Law applications.

Nelmit,
I'll keep a note of this Catherine Reid in 1881, you never know!
Thanks for looking it up for me.

Cheers,
Merlot
In the meantime, if anyone comes up with anything else, please feel free.
