Lost soldier

Post by ellenavon » Sun Oct 21, 2007 6:14 pm

Hi everyone

Would appreciate your thoughts/help on this puzzle.

I am looking for the father of David Lawson b. 10 October 1857 in Stirling.

His birth certificate, informant his maternal grandmother Susan Weir, gives his parents as David Lawson, Private 42nd Royal Highland and Helen Lawson ms Weir.

In 1861, young David was living with his maternal (Weir) grandparents in Denny, Stirlingshire.

I can (so far!) find no trace of either of his parents on the 1861 in Scotland.

In March/April 1862 Helen Weir marries Thomas Hannah, a 37 yr old widower, Quarryman, at Bannockburn, Stirlingshire. Helen signs herself as Helen Hannah, ms Weir, Widow, age 29. (She was born 17 Feb 1833 in Denny).

On Helen's death cert in 1880, informant her son the above David Lawson, he notes her as Helen Hannah, married 1. David Lawson, Private 42nd Regiment and 2. Thoas Hannah, Quarryman.

On Davids marraige cert in 1879, he notes his father as David Lawson, Private 42nd Foot.

There is no trace of a marraige between Helen and David on the IGI (oops, must double check with SP!) Could Granny, Helen and later young David have been telling fibs re the marraige for decency sake - what am I saying - of course they could!

Scotlandspeople give me 3 deaths of D* Lawson 1856-1862, none of which are my man.

Any suggestions as to where David's regiment might have been 1857-1861, and whether Helen is likely to have been with him.

Many thanks in advance.

Ellen.

Good old wildcards! And good old SP. Found the marraige (how could I have cast aspertions!!?). And a lovely 1855 one at that!

D Lawson 36, b. Ormiston (?) Parish of Haddigton 1819, Soldier 42nd Regiment. Married Helen Weir, details as above, on 2nd October 1855 at Longcroft Denny.

Doesn't help me re his whereabouts in 1861, and his death though.

Cheers

Hi Ellen
Glad you answered part of your own question! Often happens: the "putting your thoughts in order" bit that is required to pose the question often has that effect. I've done it myself.. more times than I care to remember!

Lawson could be Lauson too - so maybe try a wildcard on that too, if you have not already. Given his father was a soldier, his parents could have moved about a fair bit too, and as you have suggested, he may not have died in Scotland.

Best wishes
Lesley

Ellen,

Try having a wee look at this site:

http://www.wartimesindex.co.uk/infopage ... splay=Home

it gives which wars were going on in which years and where.

Hi,

According to http://www.regiments.org/deploy/uk/reg-inf/042-1.htm

the 42nd went to India in 1857 and returned in 1868.

Just to let you know that I've found Helen Weir/Lawson in 1861, mistranscribed as Helen Keir on Ancestry, living with her widowed husband to be Thomas Hanna(h) and his children in St Ninians, Stirling.

It does look therefore as though poor David Lawson died in India.

Fascinating links - thanks folks.

Hello Ellen,

Some links to other enquiries about 42nd Regiment with reference to Indian Mutiny medal rolls, casualty lists and Service papers. I don’t know how you get access to the Indian Mutiny Medal Roll.

The London Gazettes have lists of Indian Mutiny casualties. (You could try the Edinburgh Gazette as well but it may be the same)
http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/

If you search 1857-1863 for All Words "Lawson 42nd” you’ll find two for a D. Lawson. There may be others.

London Gazette 19 May, 1858 Page 2508
42nd Highlanders, Private D. Lawson, Reg. No. 1094, slightly wounded.

London Gazette 10 August, 1858 Page 3739
42nd Highlanders, Private D. Lawson, slightly wounded, Lucknow, 10 March, 1858.
(may be the same wound)

The regimental number (assuming it is the right one) might help in getting access to the Kew records (if any).

Hope this helps,
Alan

Just in case anyone else is interested in the Indian Mutiny, I found a transcription of the Indian Mutiny Medal Roll (British Forces) 1857-1859 on the "Families in British India Society" website on www.search.fibis.org

And I found David there!

Cheers
