Moirs and Mitchells.....

Post by janemar » Sun Jun 19, 2005 11:21 am

Hi,
fairly new to TalkingScot and still trying to find my way round the site- and make sense of some of the commentaries! Delighted to make contact with the Sturgeon side of the family- need to explore and exchange so much more, but s till hunting the Moirs and Mitchells. I know that quite a number of members of the family emigrated- 1900s? - later? I think the Moirs took off for Canada anf the Mitchells for America?. I know my Gran left for Canada - Chrisitina Smith Mitchell, but returned to Aberdeen to marry James Moir and stayed ,but a number of his siblings took off for the New World. The name Fiddes comes in somewhere as well linked with Toronto? Can anyone help?
I am fairly slow at the research and making connections- issue of time at the minute. So bear with me if I do not reply too promptly.

Mitchells

Hi Jane,

I see you're looking for Mitchells. I have information on a Mitchell family which originated in Crathie; some of whom went to Aberdeen, to Strathdon, to Banchory Ternan, to Ireland and some (most!) whom I cannot tracce at all. Who are your Mitchells so we can compare notes.

Hi Maria

Welcome to TalkingScot.

Just take your time in terms of learning how to navigate around the site, and make sure that you read and re-read the context sensitive and general help, - don't fall into the trap of "When all else fails, read the intructions :!: "

Be prepared to invest a few credits in learning how to use the site, and, whatever else you do, please don't hesitate to ask for advice here.

Mitchells

Post by janemar » Mon Jul 25, 2005 4:59 pm

Hi, Tish
Unsure if we have the same Mitchells, but who knows. I can only go back as far as early 1800s with Mitchells from Stonehaven in Kincardineshire- weavers and part time fishers? James and Christina ne Smith. I have not been able to pin down either place or date of birth for James nor Christina. Most of their offspring moved away as far as I can make out. Certainly Joseph Mitchell (one of my forebears) moved to Aberdeen - stonemason, born 1849 and died 1904. I know some of the Mitchell family emigrated but unsure all where to. I do know my grandmother's youngest brother Joe went to New York and another brother James went to South Africa. Beyond that I am a bit ignorant. Mary Mitchell, eldest daughter of James and Christina eventually emigtrated to Canada and have made contact with one of her descendents some time ago, but obviously still needs a lot of work to get more of the detail.
Thanks, Dave for your helpful comments. Beginning to get the measure of this site and where's what etc. I try not to be guilty of diving in then reading the instructions, but I do have my moments.

Hi Jane,

I agree it's unlikely. My Mitchells seem to be descended from Peter Mitchell and Mary Bowman in Crathie. They had at least 8 children born between 1789 and 1821 and none of those I found were called James. Happy hunting anyway.

Regards,

Tish
