Am trying to find any info. re: Sinclair Miller born in Wick,Caithness 1842.
I think she eventually married a James McAdie in Edinburgh
Sinclair was a twin.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Hi Gill
Not sure where you have looked already. Have you tried a search for the marriage you mention, Sinclair Miller to McAdie, on Scotlands People?
Have you tried the IGI? (www.familysearch,org) Is that where you found her birth, or has that information come from elsewhere?
The IGI has a marriage for a Sinclair Miller:
SINCLAIR MILLER
Marriages:
Spouse: JAMES MCADIE Family
Marriage: 26 NOV 1868 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
The marriage on ScotlandsPeople should give you her parents, her place of abode at the time of her marriage and an occuaption for her father. What about the census for 1851, 1861 & etc? Have you looked for her there?
Best wishes
Lesley

Miller/McAdie
Hi Lesley,
A very helpful Scots-person helped me to first find her in my family genealogy, and I then traced her in 1851,then in 1861 census'.
Her father was Kenneth Miller 46 Fisherman, then in the ensuing Census he is occupied as a crofter/mason?
I stumbled on a marriage more by accident than purpose, but there was no mention of her parents ...and I'm not too sure how to go about that.
Sinclair was about 26 when she married, and was probably working around Edinburgh district......would this mean that she did'nt need to have the parents' name on her marriage certificate?
Cheers,and thanks for your responses

Hi Gill
Edinburgh was the favourite destination for Caithness folk as there was a direct sea supply link between the ports of Wick and Leith and many of the fishermen were familiar with both ports.
Any marriage in Scotland after 1855 should supply parents names, mother's maiden name, father's occupation and also give the names of the two witnesses. Sometimes they are totally unrelated to the family, but more often than not you will find their names cropping up marrying a brother or sister, or as cousins.
Death certificates may sometimes carry wrong information but Marriage info is usually correct, and very helpful.
Several names we normally associate with male naming crop up as female names. Nicholas and Stewart are two that spring to mind.
It can make searches easier so good luck.

Hello Gill,
I have just spent some time following Sinclair. Hope some of this is new to you!
1861
Thuster, Wick, Caithness
Kenneth Miller, 57, Head, born Wick, Caithnessshire, Mason & Crofter
Helen Miller, 60, Wife, born Wick, Caithnessshire
Jannet Miller, 23, Daughter, born Wick, Caithnessshire, Ag lab
Kenneth Miller, 19, Son, born Wick, Caithnessshire, Ag lab
Sinclair Miller, 19, Daughter, born Wick, Caithnessshire, Ag lab
Margaret Gunn, 4, Grandaughter, born Wick, Caithnessshire
According to the IGI, Janet Miller is Margaret's mother:
MARGARET MILLER
Birth: 15 Feb 1857 Wick, Caithness
Mother:JANET MILLER
It sounds as though the father, Mr. Gunn, admitted paternity. Might be an RCE stamp on the birth record giving his name.
If you were having trouble finding them in 1871, they were indexed under "Hiller" on Ancestry... It is odd that Sinclair is still there, since according to that marriage, she should already have been married to James McAdie.
1871
Thrumster, Wick, Caithness
Keneth Hiller, 67, Head, born Wick, Caithness, Farmer
Jannet Hiller, 37, Daughter, born Wick, Caithness, House Keeper
Sinclair Hiller, 30, Daughter, born Wick, Caithness, Employed Out Door
Margaret Gunn, 14, Great Grandchild, born Wick, Caithness, Scholar
Helen Sinclair, 3, Great Grandchild, born Wick, Caithness
Helen, you'll be interested to know, is Sinclair's daughter. From the IGI:
HELEN SINCLAIR OR MILLER
Birth: 24 JUL 1867 Wick, Caithness
Father: ALEXANDER SINCLAIR
Mother: SINCLAIR MILLER
By 1881, Sinclair is living with James McAdie, but her daughter Helen is still living with Sinclair's father and sister:
1881
Thrumster, Wick, Caithness
Kenneth Miller, 77, Head, born Wick, Caithness, Farmer (5Acr & Acr 15 Pasture)
Janet Miller, 45, Daughter, born Wick, Caithness, Housekeeper
Helen Sinclair, 13, Grandaughter, born Wick, Caithness, Scholar
1881
2 Dean Bank Terr, St George, Midlothian
James McAdie, 42, Head, born Watten, Caithness, Grocer
Sinclair McAdie, 40, Wife, born Holkirk, Caithness
Christina McAdie, 11, Daughter, born Edinburgh, Midlothian
William McAdie, 3, Don, born Edinburgh, Midlothian
Donald McAdie, 1, Son, born Edinburgh, Midlothian
William Miller, 37, Boarder, born Holkirk, Caithness, Grocer's Assistant
John MacGregor, 27, Boarder, born Watten, Caithness, Grocer's Assistant
Are you sure the Sinclair who was born in Wick, Caithness, daughter to Kenneth, is the same one who married James McAdie? Here is James and an oddly named wife (this is the Ancestry transcription). Since James reportedly married a Sinclair Miller in 1868-- shouldn't this be her? But Sinclair Miller is still in Wick! Hmmmm.
1871
1 Clarmont Place South Side, Edinburgh St Cuthberts, Midlothian
James McAdie, 36, Head, born Walton, Caithness, Master Grocer 1 Man Employing
Linchin m McAdie, 34, Wife, born Halkirk, Caithness, Master Grocer Wife
Christina McAdie, 1, Daughter, born St Cuthberts, Edin
Robert McAdie, 6mo, son, born St Cuthberts, Edin
James McGregor, 15, Lodger, born Walton, Caithness, Porter
Well, I'll leave you to sort that out now
Regards,
Sarah

Hi Lesley,
Thankyou for your responses and my apologies for being so long winded.
I found Sinclair Miller to McAdie on Ancestry, was looking at her twin really, can't quite recall how the marriage came up.sorry!!
Her birth info. came up when I was looking at the line of the family that re-located to Liverpool, that's where her twin Kenneth ended up with his family. The IGI was my next port of call.
But am still a bit muddled as to finding her marriage on ScotsPeople
Not sure how to go about it!!!!
Cheers
Gill

Hello Sarah,
Thankyou so much for all the info.
It's going to take a while to digest all this.I did have some of the info regarding the 1861 Census, and was looking at the possibility of Jannet being Margaret Gunn's mother, but then I thought I may be chasing shadows...thanks for confirming that for me...appreciated
Why would they all come under 'Hiller" on Ancestry? Aah,okay! penny has dropped,'H' should be 'M'......THAT did not cross my mind, again thankyou
Will take a good look at all the other info.you have been kind enough to give me...and let you know WHEN I get it sorted.
Kindest regards,
Gill
