Scottish passport applications

Post by speleobat2 » Sat Dec 08, 2007 1:00 am

Are the Scottish passport applications available anywhere?

I tried checking the US applications for my relatives with no luck so I'm guessing they either never left the US once they got here or they kept they Scottish passports.

Hi Carol,

Have a look at http://heritage.scotsman.com/topics.cfm ... 1424742006 - there's a few things worth trying there. Passports were not a requirement until 1915, but some people did apply for them prior to that.

There's also a register of passport applications at Find My Past for 1851 - 1903. See http://www.findmypast.com/migration.jsp

Hope this helps! :)

Thanks Chris,

I knew about findmypast.com, but not the heritage site. What a great site that one is! Just be forewarned, you need time to read if you visit it! I got started reading about the orphans shipped out of Scotland and couldn't stop! There are pages and pages of interesting articles there.

It's interesting that passports weren't required for travel from Scotland until 1915. Even my Finnish grandparents had to have them when they left Finland around 1910 and the records go further back than that.
