Thomas C Reid - Publican
Hi,
I was wandering if anyone could help with this one. I'm trying to find out more about a Thomas C Reid who owned several pubs in Glasgow from the 1920's onwards. Apparently his family were well known, but I'm not having much luck in finding anything out. He died on 4th April 1951, aged 76.
Thanks,
Daryl

Hello,
It would help if you could tell us everything you know about him, or at least what specifically you are looking for. Do you have any idea of where he was born? Or if he was married and if so his wife's name? Any children? Any little extra bit of information could help us figure out which of the many Thomas Reids is the right one. If his profession and his death date is all you know, well... we'll just have to go with that! But I'm hoping you know one or two additional things that will help us narrow down the search [-o<
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Alan,
Is it my browser? I had read that topic and checked out the website, but every time there was a page with one of his pubs, with the line:
To read the full history of Thomas C Reid and his family of publicans click here.
I clicked here and there was nothing about him nor his family, except the names of other pubs. Am I missing something?
Regards,
Sarah

Hello Sarah,
I had trouble with that site as well because I didn’t spot the links to the other pubs in the bottom right hand corner. I then had a Google, found the other pub pages and figured out what I was not seeing.
Actually I don’t think there’s anything there about the man himself, seems to be a trick to lure you up the garden path to an advertisement for the book “Glasgow Pubs and Publicans” written by the owner of the site.

Hi,
I've unearthed some new details regarding Thomas. He was born on 2nd October 1874 in Central District, Glasgow. His parents were; William a Wireworker ? & Elizabeth Lauder who married in 1852 in Glasgow. She died on 16th May 1897 in Cumbrae, Bute. I think his father must have died between 1897 & 1912.
Hope this helps,
Daryl

Hi Daryl,darylrodger wrote: I've narrowed it down to between 1897 & 1912.
The 1901 census will narrow the window for you a bit more. Looks like William remarried after Elizabeth's death:
1901
189 Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow Govan
William Reid, 69, Head, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Wire Worker
Janet Reid, 52, Wife, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Norman McLean Calder, 30, Boarder, born England, Clerk
Cheers,
Sarah
