23 Bridge End St., Rothesay

Post by tishgibbons » Mon Dec 31, 2007 4:19 pm

While I'm waiting for SP to realise that it's the 31st of December (!!!) can anyone out there help with something? Is there any way to find out who lived at 23 Bridge End St., Rothesay in 1901? The reason I ask - one of my long losts shows up in Culross in Fife in 1898 and again in the 1901 census, on both occassions at Blair Castle. Some months prior to the census his son is born at 23 Bridge End St., Rothesay though father's domicil is given as Blair Castle. That part of the country (Rothesay)has no connection with either him or his wife, that I know of. He was born in Strathdon but with strong family ties to Crathie. She was born on the Isle of Eigg. So naturally I'm curious - were they on holidays, or even better could there be another long-lost there? Any ideas?

There is maybe a better way to do it, but I'd be thinking of looking at the microfilm for 1901 for that area. You can order the film from your nearest LDS centre if you don't know of anywhere where you are likely to see it.

AS far as I'm aware only the 1881 can be searched by address on SP. (or on the CD ROMs)

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Tish,
You can search by only the address on Ancestry. I got no results for number 23. However, I got a number of families on Bridge End Street, all even numbers for some reason. There are families at 14, 16, 18 & 20. Could it possibly be #20? What surnames might ring a bell here?

All the best,
Sarah

Later: Maybe this is a clue. There is a nurse at #20, with household members, both "visitors" at #22 :-k Could this be a place people "visited" in order to have babies?

These are all supposed to be in the same household according to Ancestry, but on the individual index entries, Janet & Jessie are at No 20 and the two "visitors" are at 22...

Rothesay, Bute
Janet Livingston, 53, Head, born Rothesay, Buteshire, Nurse
Jessie Livingston, 6, Boarder, born Rothesay, Buteshire, scholar
Margaret Sturdie, 32, Visitor, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Sewing Machinnt
Jessie Rankin, 33, Visitor, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Sewing Machinnt

Hey Folks that great! I didn't know about Ancestry. Thank you too Sarah. That must be the connection. The couple in question are Charles Mitchell and Alexin ms McDonald. Perhaps this McLellan woman is a sister. The Nurse next door may also have been part of the story.

Thanks

ps - where on Ancestry can I find this?

Oh  A few more households at that address:

23 Bridgend St, Rothesay, Bute
Ellen Judge, 43, Head, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, House Keeping
Charles Judge, 19, Son, born Falkirk, Stirling, Saddler (apprentice)
Charles Roberts, 17, Boarder, born Ireland, Joiner (apprentice)

23 Bridgend St, Rothesay, Bute
Thos McCallum, 36, Head, born Ireland, Dublin, Blacksmith

Jane C McCallum, 14, Daur, born Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, Nurse (domestic)
John Amcl McCallum, 10, Son, born Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, Scholar

You can find this on the advanced search for the 1901 census (not all censuses will have this option, unfortunately.

[cheers]
Sarah

Hmm... you can tell I don't use Ancestry much, huh? It didn't even come to mind when thinking about how you would get hold of an address... silly me!
