Elizabeth Hall Gordon

Post by Jean Jeanie » Wed Jan 09, 2008 12:08 pm

Hi All

I have been looking at Elizabeth for over a year now and have come unstuck

What I have is her birth on the IGI 10 May 1838 in Carnwath Lanark.

I have her in 1841, courtesy of our Jack. She is in Rootspark Carnwath.

In 1851 she is in Whitburn West Lothian as a servant.

In 1861 she is in Midcalder as a servant.

Can't find her in 1871.

In 1881 she is married to Robert Urquhart b abt 1842 in Falkland, Fife. He is a Law Clerk "Book Keeper" Elizabeth's age is shown as 42. No children shown. Only a niece, Mary Cochrane Neil, who is my great grandmother.

Now for the problems. Can't find her in 1891 or 1901. Can't find her death. There is only one death for an Elizabeth Urquhart, m.s. Gordon on SP in 1937 in Dingwall. Wrong age and wrong middle name.

Leaving out the m.s. of Gordon gives too many results.

I've looked on The Ellis Island Site but can't find her there.

Anyone care to have a look at this one :?

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,
Have you found the death of Robert Urquhart to see if she was still alive then?
Rae
Found a marriage for Robert Urquhart and Elizabeth Gordon on SP free search - 1876, Abernyte, Perthshire. This may not help with her death but could help to track her down in the 1871 census.
This probably isn't him but there is also a Will for a Robert Urquhart, bookkeeper, who died May 1901, Aberdeen but residence was in Edinburgh.

Hi Rae

Looking for a death for either of them between 1881 and 1891 shows no hopefuls.

I was hoping that SKS could find them in 1891 or 1901 to try and give me some searching dates. I can't find them in either of these censuses, even when I had my free Ancestry access

With her being born in Lanark and him being born in Fife and then both living in Edinburgh in 1881, it makes searching difficult. I was really hoping to find her death first, with the help of her maiden name, but that didn't work and then from that find his death.

Maybe they are hiding under some wierd mistranscription somewhere. :(

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Rae

That's the only marriage I can find for this couple too. I haven't spent the credits yet to look at it, as even if it is the correct one it won't help me to tie down any dates or areas for their deaths.

The book keeper in Aberdeen may be him but until I find their deaths, I'll leave that one on the back burner.

Many thanks for looking.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,
Did you notice that Robt and Mrs. Urquhart, both age 39  arrived in New York from Scotland as "tourists" on May 15, 1884 on the Anchoria? No other info on the forms that far back. All the tourists have "Nil" written in on the occupation line, as I suppose it didn't matter if they were not actually emigrating. No way to prove it's them, but something to ponder... I suppose that with no children they had the money to gad about

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah

Pretty sure this pair must have emigrated.

The lack of children doesn't help

Hi Jean,
Didn't see any obvious ones in the U.S., have you tried Australia? I note that there are quite a few Robert Urquharts in the Australian Electoral Rolls, 1901-1936 on Ancestry. But there is not much info, just that someone of that name was there, although some give occupations. Offhand, I don't see anything that jumps out. There is a couple in Townsville, Queensland in 1903 named Robert and Elizabeth, but he is a plasterer.
Sorry, I'm not being much help!
Sarah

Hello All

I have "bumped" this to the present day.

After 4 years I am still no further forward with ELizabeth.

So many new members have joined since 2008 and I am ever hopeful that someone with fresh eyes may be able to shed some light ](*,)

Best wishes
Jean

Greetings.

Have had a quick look at the full name option but no likely hits, and none for Elizabeth URQUHART.

But have pasted here in case there are some associated names that may indicate a next generation branch of the family in NZ.

Robert URQUHART hits on the NZ Government site ARCHWAY.
