Andrew Rough

Post by bleckie » Wed Jan 16, 2008 9:08 am

Good morning

I am looking for any information on a Andrew Rough a grave digger from Montrose Angus.

The Rough surname over the course of three generations has been spelt various ways Roch, Roche,

He married a Susan Ritchie 23 September 1810 although at that time his name was spelt Roche. They went on to have 7 children all born in Montrose.

Hi Brucel,
What information do you already have? Did he live long enough to be on any censuses?
All the best,
Sarah

Hi again,
This is perhaps his widow and some of the children?
1841
Murray St No 23
Susan Rough, 45, born Angus, Scotland, Finen Yarn Winder
Susan Rough, 15, born Angus, Flaxspinner
Charlotte Rough, 14, born Angus, Scotland, Flaxspinner
Mary Rough, 12, born Angus, Scotland, Flaxspinner
Charles Rough, 9, born Angus, Scotland
John Fraser, 25, born Scotland, Weaver
Elizabeth Fraser, 25, born Angus, Scotland
Robert Fraser, 4, born Angus, Scotland
Elizabeth Fraser, 10 Mo, born Angus, Scotland

And a couple of his children in 1851, with sister Susan fibbing a bit about her age:

1851
Reido Close, Montrose, Angus
Susan Rough, Head, 21, born Montrose, Forfar, Flax Spinner
Charles Rough, 19, Brother, born Montrose, Forfar, General Ponter

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah

This is probably his fsmily I don't think Susan is fibbing about her age this family would appear to have followed the scottish naming convention the Susan in this census is in fact Susan number 2, the first I think died when she was about 4 years old she had a twin brother, I will check tomorrow as all my details are in the office.

Hello Bruce,

If you search Google Books for "andrew rough""montrose" you’ll find a result as follows

The history of Montrose - Page 162
by David Mitchell - 1866
Mrs Black, a tenant farmer in her own right at Old Montrose, had to ride home
... I think numbered about twenty verses), was Andrew Rough the grave- digger, ...

Unfortunately it is only a snippet view of the book but I’ve manage to expand the result to

“The author of the folio ing song (which I think numbered about twenty verses), was Andrew Rough the grave- digger, who was not a little vain of ...”

If you search within the book for various pairs of words from the above you’ll see mysterious snippets referring to not necessarily related goings on in Montrose.

If you haven’t seen the book perhaps the library has a copy.

Hope this helps,
Alan
