McDougall/Rhind, Rhynd

Post by Jacobsmom » Sun Jan 20, 2008 8:00 pm

Hi Everyone, hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. I am back looking in a bit differenet direction.

I am looking for anyone who may be related to Agnes McDougall born in Feb 16, 1817 in Arrochar, Clackmannanshire. Her maiden name is Rhind, or spelled Rhynd. She married a John McDougall and lived in Glasgow, she had her nephew James Rhind (Rhynd), living with her at least during the 1861 Census. :o
Take care,

Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,
You may already have most of this, but I set out to find Agnes' siblings and identify as many as I could in the 1851 census, which is the first to give the exact birth place. A parent search on the IGI only gets some of them, since Janet's last name, which should be MacFarlane, comes out NcFarlane or NicFarlane a few times  Still can't find Walter or Mary's births, but they are obviously in the family too. See below...

First, the marriage of her parents:

Marriage:
Alexander Rhynd married Janet Macfarlane 16 Jan 1810 Dunoon and Kilmun, Argyll

Children of Alexander Rhind and Janet Macfarlane:

Catharine Rhind
Christening: 8 Dec 1811 Port Glasgow, Renfrew

William Rhind
Birth: 6 Jan 1814
Christening: 7 Jan 1814 Arrochar, Dunbarton

Janet Rhind
Birth 29 Dec 1815
Christening: 31 Dec 1815 Arrochar, Dunbarton

Agnes Rhind
Birth 9 Feb 1817
Christening: 16 Feb 1817 Arrochar, Dunbarton

Janet or Catharine Rhind
Christening: Aug 1821 Arrochar, Dunbarton

Isobel Rhind
Birth 23 Nov 1823
Christening: 30 Nov 1823 Arrochar, Dunbarton

Helen
Birth 21 Nov 1825
Christening: 4 Dec 1825 Arrochar, Dunbarton

Martin Rhind
Christening: 18 Jan 1829 Arrochar, Dunbarton

Alexander Rhind
Birth: 6 Jun 1831
Christening: 19 Jun 1831 Arrochar, Dunbarton

Alexander Rhind
Birth: 9 Feb 1839
Christening: 17 Feb 1839 Arrochar, Dunbarton

Now 1851 census for as many as I can find quickly...

1851
Tynaclach Village, Arrochar, Dumbartonshire
Alexander Rhind, 63, Head, born Tarbert, Argyllshire, Blacksmith (master) Employing One Man
Walter Rhind, 27, Son, born Arrochar, Dumbarton, Blacksmith Journeyman
Sarah Rhind, 22, Daughter-in-law, born Glenorchay, Argyllshire
Alexander Rhind, 11, Son, born Arrochar, Dumbartonshire, Scholar

1851
130 Renfield Street, Barony, Lanarkshire
Thomas Burrett, 32, Head, born Glasgow, Lanark, Blacksmith Partner of 2 Employing 3 Men
Isabella Burrett, 27, Wife, born Arrochar, Dumbarton
Thomas Burrett, 3, Son, born Glasgow, Lanark
Alexander R Burrett, 2, Son, born Glasgow, Lanark
Infant Burrett, 5 Mo, Daughter, born Glasgow, Lanark
Janet Rhind, 57, Mother-in-law, born Johnston, Renfrewsh
Janet Rhind, 29, Sister-in-law, born Arrochar, Dumbarton, Ladies Dress Maker

1851
Inverchullin, Arrochar, Dumbartonshire
Alexander MacFarlane, 66, Head Of Family, born Arrochar, Dumbartonshire, Post Retered
Mary MacFarlane, 60, Wife, born Aberfoyle, Ahshire
James MacFarlane, 40, Son, born Buchanan, Ahshire, Carter
Alexr MacFarlane, 30, Son, born Arrochar, Dumbartonshire, Joiner Journeyman
Robert MacFarlane, 21, Son, born Arrochar, Dumbartonshire, Agricultural Labourer
John Rhind, 7, Grandson, born Arrochar, Dumbartonshire
Jemima Stewart, 40, born Lass, Dumbartonshire
Mary McLellan, 33, Servant, born Lass, Dumbartonshire, House Servant
John Crawford, 18, Man Servt, born Arrochar, Dumbartonshire, Man Servant

According to the IGI, John Rhind was the son of Walter Rhind and Mary Macfarlane. Hmmm. Must be a story here

As we saw above, Walter appears to be the husband of Sarah. Here is an extracted marriage:

Walter Rhind & Sarah McNicol
31 Jan 1851 Arrochar, Dunbarton

Same couple married also on 24 Jan 1851 Glenorchy and Inishail, Argyll, so she must be from there.

1851
Govan's Land, Springburn, Lanarkshire
Robert Brown, 73, Head, born Camphil, Stirlingshire, Formerly A Favmer
James Brown, 21, Son, born Camphil, Stirlingshire, Wright
Isabella P D Brown, 18, Daughter, born Barony, Lanark
John W Brown, 14, Son, born Barony, Lanark
Martin Rhind, 21, Lodger, born Arrochar, Dunbarton, Agricultural Servant

1851
4 Garscadden Street, Barony, Lanarkshire
Robert Garvan, 34, Head, born Springburn, Lanarkshire, Manager of Quaries
Catharine Garvan, 36, Wife, born Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire
Grace Garvan, 8, Daughter, born Shringvale, Lanarkshire, Scholar
Janet Garvan, 3, Daughter, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Catharine McDougall, 22, Servant, born Island of Ling, Argyleshire, House Serv
Mary Rhind, 17, Visitor, born Arrochar, Dumbarton, Scholar

Catharine above is Agnes' sister:

Catharine Rhind married Robert Gavin 19 Nov 1842 Arrochar, Dunbarton
And also on 20 Nov 1842 in Glasgow, Lanark (only this time he is Robert Govan)

Is this brother William, with a mistake in the birth place?

1851
Lock 11 Howe, Falkirk, Stirlingshire
William Rhind, 35, Head, born Arroch, Cumberland, Foreman Platelayer
Janet Rhind, 32, Wife, born Panton, Renfrewshire
Agnes Rhind, 2, born Falkirk, Stirling
Alexander Rhind, 10 Mo, born Falkirk, Stirling

All the best,
Sarah

McDougald/Rhynd and more

Post by karlmac » Tue Feb 05, 2008 5:13 pm

Hello Stephanie:-
Noted your posting re:- McDougald/Rhynd and that coupled with the reply by Sarah led me to respond. Let's see if I'm on the right track.

Five children were born to Walter MacFarlane and Catherine Clark of the Parish of Lochgoilhead, Argyllshire.
1. Janet m. Alexander Rhynd
2. Margaret m. William Russell
3. Ann m. Neil MacNaughton
4. Peter m. 1. Margaret White
2. Helen Graham
5. Alexander m. 1. unknown
2. Helen Campbell
3. Jane McLellan
Mary Macnaughton, daughter of Ann and Neil (3. above) m. Robert MacNaughton. They came to New Brunswick, Canada in 1875.
The two sons also came to New Brunswick - Peter in 1827 and Alexander in 1858.
Have little Rhynd or Russell data but quite a bit on the MacFarlane and MacNaughton families. So if this clicks and you are interested let me know.
Best wishes Karl MacNaughton karlmacATnbnet.nb.ca
