I am looking for my relatives, I have hit a brickwall in James Paterson b 1806. On his second marriage certificate (Grace Ford in Plymouth, Devon) it states that he was born in Scotland, well it is a big place, he originally married Elizabeth Mitchell in 1825 in Stoke Damerel, Plymouth, Devon again. In 1841 he is a MALSTER and living in East Stonehouse, Plymouth, Devon.
I hope that someone may be able to help or point me in the right direction.
Can Anyone Help?

Hi Sarah & welcome to
.
I was wondering does the 1841 Census give a place of birth for James apart from Scotland?
I don't suppose they were any handy siblings lurking around the census either.
If he married in 1825 in Plymouth he must have left Scotland fairly early on.
What did he name his children-this can give a clue to parentage as many Scots followed a naming pattern IE Eldest son named for Father's Father & Eldest Daughter for Mother's Mother,Second Son for Mother's Father & Second Daughter for Father's Mother.
Have you found any likely ones using the age & name on the IGI or OPR at ScotlandsPeople??
It is a common name but as I said the naming of his children may give you some clues plus you may be lucky if any of the Cenuses give an actual place in Scotland for his birth.
I am sure there may be some help from others so don't lose heart.
My inclination would be to look for any likely lads on the IGI & then check the image on the OPR where maybe the Father's occupation is given & perhaps James followed in his Father's footsteps.

Thank you.
Children of the marriage to Elizabeth Mitchell are John Mitchell Paterson born 1825 and Elizabeth Mitchell Paterson born 1928, child of the marriage to Grace Ford was Edward John Patterson born 1847 (but listed as 1845, we believe to get into the Navy before he was of age). You will note that there are 2 t's after he married Grace.
I am looking at the IGI's at the moment but there are a few around.
Thank you once again for your reply.

This is probably James in 1851 - his age is given as 50 giving a birth date of c. 1801 - this is probably more reliable than 1841 as ages were rounded down to nearest 5 years - place of birth is country only
