Macleans in Larkhall

Post by Loumac » Fri Mar 07, 2008 10:51 pm

I am starting a search on my fathers side........
The little bit of info is that he lived on McNeil Street,Larkhall and then moved to Dalmellington,Ayrshire........
His fathers name was John Maclean and they would have been a family of about 9 in Larkhall before moving to Dalmellington.
I do know in the end there were 18 children to 2 wives......

I wil try to post more info as I get it....
Many thanks for now.......

Hi Loumac,

Welcome to TalkingScot :) [talkingscot]

Good luck with your search on your father's side. What time period are you talking about? Are you looking for something specific, or just hoping someone might recognize the name and get in touch?

Regards,
Anne H

Hi Anne,
Thanks for the welcome.
I haven't got a great deal of info to go on but I think I'm looking at 1930-1940......in the Larkhall/Dalmellington areas because they moved to Chesterfield,Derbyshire when the mines opened in the area.....

I will endeavour to get any info I can get from the remaining family members......

Again many thanks

Terry Maclean........

Hi Terry,

We’ll do all we can to help you in your search for your ancestors from an earlier period, but unfortunately, the dates you’re interested in are awfully close to the cut-off dates for discussion online at TalkingScot. There is every possibility that those you’re hoping to find are still alive, or would have living relatives.

For your Scottish records, if you go to Scotland’s People (link at top of this page), you’ll find the modern day indexes for births and deaths up to 2006 (still waiting for the modern marriages to come online). If you are fortunate enough to live close to either Glasgow or Edinburgh, you can view the actual modern day records.

Take a look at the links we've collected http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5576

Lots of luck with your searches, and I hope your relatives can fill you in a bit.

Regards,
Anne H

Not probably relevant but the famous Mclean footballing family (Willie, Jim and Tommy) were from Ashgill which is next door to Larkhall may be a relation.

After doing some research my Uncle came up with this on Ancestry..
1901 Census
My Great Grandfather-William McLean(Coal Miner)82 Mack St(Parish-New Monkland)-Wife-Christina(McQuilham)
He was born-Armadale,Linlithgowshire in 1877

1891 Census
My Great Great Grandfater-James McLean(Farmer)South Medrox Farm-Wife-Mary
He was born-Cadder, Lanark in 1838
So far so good.........

Finding the marriage details, of the couples you mention, on Scotlands People will give you the parents of the bride & groom and will help you get a bit further back.

That's wonderful, Terry. Besides getting the marriage on SP for further informtion on parents as Wilma suggests, don't forget to utilize the IGI to help narrow down your choices for records of your earlier ancestors.
