Watt's x Gamrie.....

Post by moresmall » Mon Jun 27, 2005 4:32 am

Hi

Just wondering if anyone has knowledge or information about a George Watt, a fisherman, born in Gamrie in 1869. He married Ann Watt (parents Gilbert Watt & Ann Forbes) 1896 in Gamrie. They had 1 daughter, Barbara born 1898.

George was drowned at sea in 1898 or 1899. Ann remarried Joseph Ritchie 4th son of John Ritchie & Ann Taylor, 5 October 1882 in Rosehearty. Joseph had previously been married to Mary Ann Mitchell, who died 24th June 1904, they had 6 children, eldest daughter was my grandmother Jane Ritchie.

Maureen,

There is ony one George Watt listed in the IGI for 1868 and two for 1869 If you get his marriage registration from SP you should be able to find his parents names, if you don't already have them, from this you will be able to get his birth registration info.

Do you know if his death was registered, if not it might have been recorded in the local newspapers.

Yuo will find George's death register entry in 1899. It's unusual in that it only shows that he was married, and doesn't include the name of his wife.

That it is the correct George WATT, - that surname is one of two that predominate in Gardenstown, - is shown by the parents' names matching those shown on the 1896 marriager register entry.

You should then be able to trace back at least another generation via the death register entries of George's parents, but watch out for the hordes of WATTs :!: :?

Hello Maureen
I live in Banff and there is a fabric/paint shop that has been in Banff forever named Forbes Watt. Don't know if there is any connection but if you would like me to do a little asking around (people here have very long memories and know everyone!!) Gamrie is also just along the road, would be happy to check out the cemetarys for you

Hello Maureen

This is not answering your question sorry  but,

All of one side of my family came from Gamrie/Gardenstown and so i have many b.m.d downloads from S/P. I have two Watt births mentioned on two of them so far............

Margaret Ann Watt b 24th January 1871 Gardenstown Parish of Gamrie
parents John Watt - Fisherman and Margaret Watt, Miss Watt. John and Margaret married 1854 Dolrig (?) Gamrie.

Maggie Jessie Davidson b 23rd July 1885 Gardenstown Gamrie. Parents Peter Davidson - General Labourer and Maggie Davidson miss Watt. Peter and Maggie married December 18th 1884 Gamrie.

A Marriage 9th September 1890 Gamrie
Francis Watt -Fisherman aged 23 (parents John Watt -Fisherman and Margaret Watt miss Downie) to Elizabeth Watt aged 19, parents James Watt -Fisherman and Ann Watt miss Nicol)

These may or may not be yours of of use to you but if they are and you havnt got them i will happily send them to save spending more on S/P :D

Hi James

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

It would be much appreciated it you are prepared to ask around for me, also check out the cemeteries.

Living in New Zealand it makes it that much harder to check out ancestors in NE Scotland.

Maureen.

Hope to go to Gamrie this weekend, just checking the info with you as I understand it.
George Watt married Ann Watt had a child barbra 1898
George died 1898/99 at sea
Ann remarried 1882 Rosehearty to a Joseph Ritchie he was 4th child of John Ritchie and Ann Taylor
Joseph previous married Mary Ann Mitchell died 1904
also looking for a Gilbert Watt and Ann Forbes they married Gamrie 1896

Are there any other names I should be on the lookout for?

If I get the opportunity I will also try and visit the Megway at Oldmeldrum where they keep all the archive records for the north east. Not promising anything, but will do my best, got the cold at the moment not suprising its down to -4 here at night

Hello Maureen
Reporting back from the trips to Gamrie cemetary and St. Johns Churchyard Gamrie.
Gamrie has mostly burials from around 1900 to present day, did find lots and lots of watts but none that I could link with your names. Couple I did spot

John Watt lost at sea 16th March 1899 aged 33 and mother Jane Ann Watt d 1935 age 65 brother George 8 years 1900

Frank W West General Merchant, Gardenstown d 15th Jan 1956 (no age given) husband of Barbra Ann Watt d 4th Dec 1987 aged 89 and daughter Francis Mary died in infancy.

The st johns chruchyard is in a great setting a lovely walk (about mile and a bit) Though it is very old and a lot of the gravestones are unreadable or compltely destroyed by weather. I am going to find out if it has been transcribed if not then its in such a lovely spot I might just to it myself.
St Johns Churchyard dates from early 1700's
Alex Watt Fisherman Crovie (which is in sight of Gamrie) d 19th Sept 1879 age 68
helen Watt wife of the above named Alexander Watt died in her 83rd year and Jane Watt daughter b 1851 died Aug 1910

Another headstone
James Watt age 78 d 1904
Christine West age 87 d 1902
Christine d 1900 age 99 (yes 99)
Also J W Shand age 4 months

Another
Ann Watt wife of John Watt fisherman Crovie d 1869 erected by sons
(no other names given)
If you want me to double check anything then please let me know. I would be happy to do so.
Some of the other names that keep coming up at both graveyards
Ingram, Sangster, Shirran, Wilson, Strachen, Nicol, Richardson. If anyone else would like me to check then no problem. Some unusual ones as well 'Kindness' was one and someone with a christian name of Corstorphine. I know that Corstophine comes from Cross of Torphin in Edinburgh!!! It was a pleasent sunny day I had a lovely walk and I enjoyed myself.
