1871 Scottland Census Help

Post by Highlander sa » Thu Apr 10, 2008 10:22 pm

Hi everyone,
once again I am stuck :(
On Ancestry i have found my Ancestor William New b abt 1864 in the 1871 scotland census living with his siblings and his mother Janet New
in Lanarkshire, on a farm called Brownhill, Janet is down as Farmers Wife,
but i can't find them on Scotlands people at all, i think it may be under a different spelling, I have got Williams marriage certificate which names his father as a Thomas New a railroad Labourer, but as william married in England the certificate is not much help.
If anyone can help at all i would be very grateful,

many thanks
Steve

New / Kerr family

Post by Jack » Thu Apr 10, 2008 10:37 pm

Hi Steve,
Seems SP has that "NEW" family as KERR.
But the father here is a George, not a Thomas... :?

ps later - I know you have the 1871, it's just to compare.
And perhaps father George has remarried by 1881?

So a transcription error by Ancestry saying the surname in 1871 was NEW - should've been KERR.
Sorry, not what you wanted to hear...
What censuses do you have for William New?

Hi Jack,

thanks for this, looks like it's not going to be that easy,

My william New is on the 1901 and 1891 England ensus (as he was married in kent england), with one giving his birth as 1867 and the other as 1864, born in Scotland, and on his marriage certificate in 1890 he was 25 years old.

I have been through Ancestry and Scotlands people and there is only one other william new with a father thomas in scotland but he was born about 1851 which even allowing a certain amount of leeway for the birth year is still very far out, and that Thomas occupation is an engine driver.

The only other William New born around that time with a father Thomas who is a Railroad Labourer is in the England Census for Wiltshire :?

But he is down as being born in Stratton Wiltshire!!!

thank you for clearing that section up for me

Steve

ps:is it possible for him to have been born in scotland without appearing on the scotlands people records?

Hi Steve,

It shouldn't be possible. All post-1854 births should have been registered, according to the law. I guess a few may have escaped registration, but I presume these were very few in number.

For that era, all of the births registered should appear on ScotlandsPeople. I am not aware of any records missing from the website.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Steve,
Do you know if your William New had any siblings?
If yes, forenames? Approx birth years?
And do you know what Wiliam's mother's forename & surname are?
Ta - Jack
