Help required with Paterson

Post by Eileen » Wed May 07, 2008 8:31 pm

Hi All
I wonder if someone could point me in the right direction please.
George Paterson is my 2nd great grandfather he married 1st Agnes Paterson, 2nd Jane Bishop, I have both marriage certs with parents as David Paterson & Janet Paterson.
I also have his brother Joseph's marriage same parents. so far so good.
Unfortunately death certs for George and Joseph state mother's maiden name as Philp.
I have a 1851 census for David and Janet with 4 children but no sign after that.
Where do I go next :?:

Hi Eileen

Do you have dates and locations. I guess that since Philps are involved you are looking at Fife.

Hi Anne
George Paterson was born Clackmannan 1834, According to 1841 census they were all born clackmannan.
Sorry I think I said 1851 Census on my original message.
David b 1806, Janet 1808
There is a marriage for David & Janet 1828 Clackmannan but not one for Janet Philp.

Hi Eileen,

Is this David the shoemaker? See the Ancestry transcriptions below. If these look to be likely candidates, then it is worth seeing the original documents on SP for 1851 to 1871. 1881 transcriptions on SP or LDS CDs.

1851
New Row, Tullibody, Clackmannanshire

David Paterson 44, Shoemaker, born Alton [presumably Alloa]
Janet Paterson 40, born Alton [presumably Alloa]
James Paterson 9, born Alton [presumably Alloa]
Robert Paterson 7, born Alton [presumably Alloa]
Janet Paterson 4, born Alton [presumably Alloa]
Margaret Paterson 8 Mo, born Alton [presumably Alloa]

1861
New Row, Alloa, Clackmannanshire

David Paterson 43, Shoemaker, born Alloa
Janet Paterson 55, born Tullibody
James Paterson 19, Miller, born Tullibody
Margaret Paterson 11, born Tullibody

1871
26 Main Street, Alloa, Clackmannanshire

David Paterson 57, Shoemaker, born Clackmannan
Janet Paterson 60, born Alloa
David Paterson 7, grandson, born Lonton, Peebles-shire [presumably Linton]

1881
Linnmill, Clackmannan

David Paterson 71, General Labourer, born Clackre [presumably Clackmannan]
Janet Paterson 69, born Carnock, Fife
David Sharp 5, grandson, born Clackre [presumably Clackmannan]

The 1881 entry is a bit more sceptical, but may be worth looking at.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew
David was a Coal miner. SP has 3 David Paterson's born 1804, 1807, 1810 all Clackmannan. 1841 census from sp gives his age as 35, so could be one of them but can't find death to confirm this.
Both parents were alive in 1867 Josephs marriage, dead by 1892 georges second marriage, so if you can trust that info it narrows the search a bit. Still a lot of David Patersons though.

Just to confuse matters there is a david marrying a janet paterson in 1850 also in clackmannan.

Would you take maiden name on marriage certs as the more likely one.

Hi Andrew
Looked at 1881
Found these deatails on FS
David married Janet Bowie, daughter Mary Dickie Paterson married James Sharp. David Sharp is not on family search probably because of birth year.
What this does do is possibly remove 1 of my David Paterson's from the list.
Only 2 to go
Thank you
Eileen
