birth of murdoch beaton

Post by mossiepossie » Tue May 13, 2008 7:24 pm

I have quite a lot of information about Murdoch (Murdo) Murdock Beaton all these names have been used in his history but I cannot find his birth. I think he was born about 1820 in URQUHART LOGIE WESTER ross & cromarty. His parents were Donald Beaton and Isabella m/s unknown. can anyone help?

Hi Mossiepossie,

Beaton was not a common name in Urquhart & Logie Wester, Ross & Cromarty. On doing batch searches, there were only five Beatons in C110842 (baptisms 1715-1819) and only one in C110844 (baptisms 1820-1854). None of them are near to matching the details that you have.

If he was baptized in that parish, then it may have been in a church other than the Established Church of Scotland.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello Mossiepossie,

Looks like there could be some gaps in the Register as well.

Indications are, according to this 1840s survey, that there were periods of years in the early 1800s when baptisms and marriages were probably not recorded.

Scottish Parochial Registers: Memoranda of the State of the Parochial Registers of Scotland. Published 1849.

URQUHART AND LOGIE (WESTER). — "The oldest register now extant is dated in 1715. One commencing in 1709 is said to have existed, if so, it must have been lost. For the last thirty or forty years the entries seem to have been made very irregularly, there being intervals of years, during which neither baptism nor marriage was inserted; and in the case of baptisms, when recorded, the name of the father alone was registered. Subsequently, however, more attention was paid to this important matter; and for a considerable number of years back, the registers have been kept with great care, baptisms and marriages being punctually entered. Of deaths no record is kept, — a circumstance which requires reform.''
