Sanquhar Kirk Session Records

Post by catlady462 » Wed May 21, 2008 12:22 am

Does anyone know if these exist? I have an OPR baptism that reads as
follows: Elizabeth illegitimate daughter of Mary McMichan by John Scott, Sanquhar, born April 20th and baptized may 27, 1839.......the odd thing for me is a note in the margin that states the following:
"held in ( ) ( ) (can't read these two words) of a letter from Kirk Session Sanquhar. Fee not paid.

This birth was in Caerlaverock I am trying to find out more about the John Scott who is listed as the father of this child. Elizabeth always goes by the Scott name. When she marries in 1864 at Greenmil to William Moffat....the marriage certificates lists her as....Elizabeth Scott - father John Scott, mason mother Mary McMichan. Mary and John never married.

Researching: McMichan, Dixon, Davidson, Moffat, Sturgeon, Johnstone, Merrick, Farrish, Meldrum, Tweedie, Barton,

Hi Catlady,

It doesn't look as if these Kirk Session records have survived, or at least they have never made their way to NAS, either as original or as a copy.

According to the NAS online catalog: http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/

CH2/1269 Sanquhar, St Bride's Kirk Session 1876-1969
CH2/1319 Wanlockhead Kirk Session 1861-1977
CH2/1410 Wanlockhead Hastings Memorial Church (formerly Free Church) 1932-1932

CH3/1589 Sanquhar North (burgher) Kirk Session, United Presbyterian, United Free, CofS, Sanquhar North United Free Church 1820-1931

It looks like you would need to see the Sanquhar, St Bride's Kirk Session pre-1876. There is no sign of them still existing, or at least not turned over to NAS for keeping or copying. There is the outside possibility that they remain in the Church, or are held privately elsewhere.

I included Wanlockhead, as that was a quoad sacra parish raised from Sanquhar parish. The CH2 series documents are from the Established Church of Scotland. The CH3 series are from the churches which split from, and later re-joined the Established Church of Scotland.

All the best,

AndrewP
