Hello all –
I am new here, but hope you can help clear up a family history mystery (one of many!)
I am looking for the parents of Hugh Campbell, born around 1790 in Scotland. Current family research has him being born in 1786, near Sarsgrum (Sarlisgrum?), Durness, Sutherland, Scotland, with his parents as Hugh Grange Campbell and Margaret MacKay.
BUT
There is some family lore hinting he may have been born in “the Borders”, perhaps Ayr.
AND
The 1841 Census indicates his birthplace as England.
So, confusion reigns!
What we DO know about Hugh Campbell is that he married Mary MacKay (daughter of Hugh MacKay and Barbara Morison) in 1809 in Eriboll, Durness, Sutherland, Scotland. He was a shepherd in Sarsgrum for most (if not all) of his adult life.
He had 10 children – Hughina, Mary, Jane/Jean, Barbara, Robert, Hugh, Margaret, Thomas, Magdalene and Georgina.
He had died by 1861, although we do not know when. He may have been alive at the time of the 1851 census, but he was not living in the house if he was. His wife was listed as Head, but not specifically as a widow. So his death could have been anywhere from 1841-1861.
If anyone out there has any new clues, I’d appreciate the info!

Kygans,
I checked SP there are only 3 deaths for Hugh Campbell b 1790 +/- 5yrs from 1855 to 1861 so it might be worth a look.

Hi Kerry and Welcome to TalkingScot![scotland-flag]
That's a lot of information! Have you checked ScotlandsPeople http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk or IGI http://www.familysearch.org?
There is a lot of information on the IGI about all of the people you mention in your post. Although I didn't see any Hugh born in Durness c1790, all of his children were.
On ScotlandsPeople there are 6 Hugh Campbells born in 1796 and only 14 between 1788 and 1792. Although it is a pay per view site, you may be able to narrow down the correct one.
Also on ScotlandsPeople there is a registration of their marriage, (and all the children's christenings/births) so it may also further clarify which one is correct.
Hope this is of help,
Frances

Thanks for the thoughts!
Jane - I have checked those 3 SP death records. 2 are definitely not him, and the 3rd has so little information it is impossible to know-except that the place of death seems unlikely.
Frances - I will go back to SP and check out those 14 Hughs, and perhaps the children as well, for a hint. I also have Hugh and Mary's marriage document from SP.
The real problem is, I have no way of proving that any Hugh I find birth info from is the same Hugh as married Mary MacKay!
