My Grandpa and his family stayed at 750 Yoker Road Yoker in April 1919. Shortly after that Yoker Road became Dumbarton Road. My Grandpa’s family stayed at 2184 Dumbarton Road until the 1980’s. My mum was brought up in the next close at 2190 Dumbarton Road, where I was born. I have been trying to find out if 750 Yoker Road became 2184 Dumbarton Road at the changeover but with no success yet. I have been to the Mitchell Library but the maps of that time have no street numbers on them. Can anyone suggest any other way to find out this information?
thanks
Catherine

Hi Catherine,
You could try the Post Office Directories at The Mitchell from 1926 onwards to see if there are any clues - eg side streets, businesses or whatever.
But there is no mention of Yoker Rd in the online 1927 Directory (Scotstoun & Yoker came under Renfrew Parish till 1925).

Maybe ask at The Mitchell if they have the Valuation Rolls for the addresses in those years. Not too sure if they will have Renfrew, but no harm in asking as they do have Paisley.
Wish you well, and i think the answer will be somewhere in The Mitchell.

ps, you could look at 1901 census for a Yoker Rd. The route taken by the enumerator might help narrow down where a particular number was - ie between which side streets.

Yoker Road/Dumbarton Road
Thank you very much for the suggestions Jack. I'll try the 1901 census first...it seems the sensible place to start!
cheers

Did you know the McArthur family that lived at 2109 Dumbarton Rd? I do not know exactly when they moved there, but my grandfather died during the Blitz in 1941 on this street on his way to work. My grandmother stayed there I believe until 1948 or 1949.

Marva,
I cannot believe you're grandparents lived at 2109 Dumbarton Road, so did mine.
My grandparents lived at 26 Blawarthill Street during the war. They moved to Dumbarton Road in 1947/48 as they were still in Blawarthill Street when my Grandfather died in December 1946. The name was McCulloch. I wonder if my family moved into you're families old house. It was the first door on the middle landing. My mother and uncle lived there until they both married in 1957. My Grandmother was there until the late 1980's when she moved to Berryknowes Road in Cardonald. I still refer to the Dumbarton Road house as my grans.
I spent a lot of time there as a child. The only person I remember , who very possibly lived there at the same time as you're Grandparents was Mrs Neville. She lived on the top floor and I was terrified of her. She was very old and always wore black.
Who would have believed after all these years!
Christine.

Christine,
Quite possible they moved in after my Gran left. She came to visit us for 6 months in 1948. Before she left she gave up her residence and her other daughter and husband gave up theres so they could get a bigger house. However, when my gran returned to Scotland (she was afraid if she did not reurn my aunt would not get the bigger house) things were not good for my Gran. She would not tolerate drinking and my aunt's husband hit the bottle. So my Gran moved to Gargunnock House, Sterling until she passed away in 1962. She wished then she had stayed here with my mom and family. My mom, dad, sister & brother were born in Scotland but I was born Michigan, and have never had a chance to go to Scotland, maybe someday. Wish I had someone to ask about the names you mentioned but family has all passed away here. I do have a picture as 2109 is today. A fine gent sent it to me via e mail.

Hi Marva,
2109 Dumbarton Road has probably changed little since you're grandparents lived there. As my gran moved out at the end of the 1980's, I obviously haven't seen the house for a number of years.
In the early seventies my gran was moved to another house in the area while the buildings were renovated. They really didn't do a lot to them apart from sandblasting the exterior and updating the insides. To be perfectly honest, I couldn't see much difference once she moved back in. The layout of the houses was exactly as they had been before. The only real difference, I think, will be that the front entrance, or the close as it is known, will have a security door.
Next time I'm home, I'll make a point of visiting and see what has changed and what hasn't and let you know.
Take Care,
Christine.

Christine,
Wish you could tuck me in your suitcase when you go. I have never been but someday I plan to. My grandfather was killed in front of 2109 March 1941 during the Blitz on his way to work. Hope to hear from you again.
