We might be related although I cannot prove it. Margaret Barnes was married to Andrew Torrance & the Mother of my GGGRandfather James Torrance.
Unfortunately she died in 1851/53 in Greenock & so no documented proof of her parentage thus far.
She does give Ballantrae as her POB in the 1851 Census. The IGI has two Margaret Barnes born Ballantrae in the relevant time scale. One set is John Barnes & Elizabeth Candlish.
She died when James was a baby & no mention of parents on her marriage
entry.James was their only child so no chance of checking against naming patterns either(Although Andrew's Father was Thomas so they weren't following it anyway!
So it's a possibility that we may have a connection but as to how to prove/disprove it? Any suggestions gratefully received.

Margaret Barnes b. Ballantrae 1826
Hello Joette,
I have long thought that Margaret married Andrew Torrence. The only other possible marriage I could see for her was to a James Mitchell, but that happened in Dundee.
I have Margaret & Andrew in 1851 in Dalry with son James aged 1. In 1861 Andrew is in Govan without her.
It is very frustrating when you feel certain about a link, but can have no proof. What became of her brothers is even more frustrating.
John (b.1831) was "in America" in 1868 when his father died. I just cannot pin him down, there are too many.
Matthew (b.1833) just disappears. To America too? And the same goes for Robert (1835) after 1851. Then there's William (1841). Surely they didn't ALL go to the US?
they represent a very big chunk of my ancestry!
Susan

Susan I long thought these were her parents. So maybe we are related.
Yes Andrew & James ended up in Govan with Andrew's Mother Elizabeth Lynn helping to raise James.
Andrew ended up in poor health & so therefore had to apply for Poor relief which gave the details of Margaret's demise in Greenock c 1852-54.
I have never explored the Barnes as not sure of which line to go.Now I will
have a search although not too sure where to go.
If Samuel ended up in Govan via Greenock maybe they were in contact with each other?
I always felt sorry for James as an only child his Father did remarry but to an older lady & they had no other children.James made up for it by having seven including my GGranny Elizabeth Torrance.

Joette,
I would be very interested to know more about your Barnes/Torrance ancestry.
I have not been able to find James in any of the censuses after 1861. Are the names mistranscribed on Scotland's People?
Thank you for your help,
Kind Regards,
Susan

Torrance, Torrence
I am interested in your comments about Torrance. I descend from Andrew Torrence(Torrance) also refered in one source as Thomas Torrance. Andrew born 1735 in Larkhall & died there in 1805 although I have been unable to find any records to confirm. He married Marion Gibb. They had Thomas b 1778, James 1779, John 1786, William(my ancestor) 1790, Isabella 1794 and Benjamin 1797. I have found an OPR for Isabella in Sorn Ayrshire. All the brothers came to Canada and were successful business men. Does any of this match up with your lines??
I have been unable to find any records for the father or the births of the brothers. I suspect that they may have been Presbyterian in that several became active in the Presbyterian churh in CAnada.
Would love to share thoughts , data, ideas
Cordially

Hello
My Torrances come from Quarter and Lesmahagow. I had a dig through this site because there is a Lesmahagow connection. Fascinating stuff, but maybe you all know it already. However, just in case. . . . .

Thanks for the reference. I have used that and found some inconsistencies. Will keep on digging. and looking for information about the history of tha area during the time that Andrew(Thomas) Torrance(Torrence) was there in Lansrshire & Ayrshire. I have plenty of information about the sons and their life in Canada but like their father have very little about them in Scotland

All I know about my Torrances is that Andrew Torrance's Father was Thomas Torrance a Merchant Seaman.Andrew's Mother Elizabeth Linn may also have given birth to a son two years previously in the same area of Stranraer Charles King. She always gave her marital status as Single on all Censuses.Andrew as head of household in 1861 also gave her as Single so am presuming she was never married.
So my Torrances are most definetly Irish in origin but where?
Andrew remarried around 1863.He is described in the Poor Law Archive as "sober, industrious & hard working gentleman". Who could no longer work due to ill-health-his eyesight was poor & paralysis in one arm is suspicious of a stroke to me.

Re: BARNES (Ballantrae; Kilmarnock; Govan)
Hi Susan,
I have just joined talkingscots today, and I was excited to see your posting of John Barnes and Elizabet Candlish. My husand's ancestor Joseph Barnes is listed as the son of John Barnes and Elizabeh Candlish on his death certificate. He died in Kilmarnock in 1908. It looks as though we may be cousins as Josephs son, John Barnes immigrated to Utah in 1910, and he is my husbands, John Barnes also, great grandfather. Is Joseph Barnes listed as on of the siblings of Samuel Barnes (1806-1869)? Thanks, Rayleen Barnes
