McKinlay.....

Post by Scozzie » Thu Jul 07, 2005 1:58 am

My Great-grandfather was James McKinlay, he married Christine Aird. Their son was George McKinlay, he married Isabella Robertson (her parents were John Robertson & Isabella Craig). I believe my grandfather had a brother James and a sister Jessie (Jessica?). Jessie may have gone to New Zealand, no idea when. The only dates I have are my grandfather's death, 21st December 1956, and my grandparents marriage in Dalserf 31 December 1913. My grandparents lived in Larkhall Lanarkshire.

Looking for: McKinlay, Robertson, Aird, Craig, Adam, Clark, Morning, Millar, Bell, Davidson & McVake

Hi Scozzie!

You've got tons of places to look!! The first place to go is to the Scotland's People website and buy yourself some credits. Then go searching for a marriage between James McKinlay and Christina Aird (there's only one in 1891). Once you see the marriage date and if it's before the 1891 census was taken then you can find them together.....or if they married after the census date then look for them in other households (use their parents names from their marriage cert to assist) Don't forget to jump ahead to the 1901 census and locate the whole family there too. This should include some children and maybe even George! With good recorded information from the Statutory records you should be able to work back several generations!!

Just yell if you need a hand......

Best wishes
Jean

Thanks Jean! I'm totally new to this, please forgive my ignorance. What do you mean by "buy some credits"? ANY help at all will be gratefully received. I feel like I'm stumbling around in the dark.

Hi Scozzie.....more than happy to try to assist. The Scotland's People website which you can link to through our "Sources" link button at the top of our forum is a pay per view website containing the Statutory Records, 1871, 81, 91, 1901 census indexes and Old Parish Registers for the whole of Scotland. To use the site you must register and establish a password. Then in order to perform searches and buy "views" of the actual records you must use a credit card to buy credits. Each search costs 1 credit and to view a particular record costs 5 credits. I ran a search and spent 1 credit to see there was this marriage:

1 1891 MCKINLAY JAMES AIRD CHRISTINA LESMAHAGOW LANARK 649/00 0005

But if i viewed the actual record it would cost me 5 more of my credits (and I don't have that many credits left!!!) The record will show the marriage data....parents.....place....officating minister etc......

Is this making any sense???

Slow me down if need be.... :D

Best wishes
Jean

Thanks Jean - I owe you a credit! I registered with Scotland's People, the site disappeared, so I tried again, same thing..... tried again. Then I checked email - I got six replies from them. Arrrrrrrgh! I got a light, stumbled in, trying not to fall over my own feet..........
How does that credit thing work? Do credits expire if you don't use them? Very confusing. How many credits do you recommend getting first time?

Hi Scozzie

You can't buy less than 30 credits which costs 6 pounds (sorry am in USA....and my keyboard only knows dollars and cents  ). I suggest you start with the minimum....you'll see they spend fast enough!! Don't worry about the one credit I spent on you....consider it a good luck push towards finding lots more lost rellies!! :!:

You'll be a pro at this in no time!

Best wishes

Thanks Jean - you're a star! I don't have a pound symbol either. 6 pound is about $15Aus I think.... that won't break the bank! I've been trying to find out info about my dad's side for years, kept hitting walls. Hopefully this will help. I guess I've got the genealogy disease now.

Well Scozzie...you've come to a good place :!: We're all a little genealogy infected around here.....and prone to having some good fun in the process 8) If you don't spend all your credits within the alloted time then they don't disapper...they just become inactive. Next time you swipe the card they get added on to the total you buy at that time. You're right...it doesn't break the bank until you get a family of 10 that all marry and have 10 and then......well...it can add up  Important to pace yourself :!:

Best wishes

10! I'm in trouble...... I've heard that one of my great-great-great grannies had 17 living children! One set of great-great-grandparents were John & Margaret Smith. I don't think I'll go down that path, especially if John is one of 17.
