1841 & 1851 Scotland Census - William Hutchison

Post by innjess » Sun Jul 13, 2008 3:37 am

In the 1841 Census his birthplace is given as just "Midlothian, Scotland" ... in the 1851, while he was at George Heriot's Hospital (his school), it was given as "Frinsty Colliip, Edinburgh" - a schoolboy prank or jape? I wonder..

Hi Innes,

I take it you are geting these from Ancestry. Many of their transcriptions of the censuses are way off the mark. They claim the transcribing was done by humans, but when you see some of them they are unpronounceable, so were far more likely transcribed electronically which has not worked on the many and varied handwriting styles.

Without seeing the original census page, I would stab a guess that this person was born in the Trinity College parish in Edinburgh.

The best thing to do is for you to download a copy of the census page from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk on a pay per view basis and see what was actually written.

All the best,

AndrewP

Spot on , Andrew! I'll take heed of your advice!
Now, if I could only confirm William Hutchison's actual date of birth...! Seems very elusive.
