McVake.....

Post by Scozzie » Thu Jul 07, 2005 2:05 am

My great-great-grandmother was Catherine McVake. She married William Clark, coalminer, probably in Lesmahagow. They had three daughters Annie 3 April 1858, Helen 29 May 1856 & Margaret 11 November 1864. Margaret was my great-grandmother. She married Thomas Smith in September 1896 in Lesmahagow Lanark. They had six children, John, Thomas, Jess & Anne (twins), Martha, & Catherine. Catherine was my grandmother, born 19 March 1898. I've never heard the name McVake anywhere else.

Looking for: McVake, Clark, Davidson, Adam, Morning, Bell, Millar, McKinlay, Robertson, Aird, Craig

Hullo again, Scozzie.

I had a look at the free surname search on Scotland's People. McVake is certainly not common, which might be helpful for your research, but there are a few.

Census 1871 12
1891 9
1901 7
Statutary Births 30
Mariages 22
Deaths 29
No OPRs at all, so they must have arrived from elsewhere (Ireland??) after 1855. Either that or they are found under different spellings of the name.

Happy hunting

HiCatriona. I know nothing at all about Catherine McVake. The name may have been spelled McVaik. Either of them are unusual, I've never come across the name before. I'll be having a look at Scotland'sPeople soon, I hope to have some luck.

Sorry! I should have written it out in full. It stands for Old Parish Registers. This is where we can find information about births, mariages and deaths befor official registration began in 1855.

Hi Scozzie,

Where were the 3 children of William CLARK & Catherine McVAKE born?
I'm having trouble finding them in the IGI (International Genealogical Index).

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... _form=true

It's just that if Margaret was born in Scotland 1864, her BC should give when & where her parents married.

Hi

On the IGI there are six children born to Alexander McVake and Ann Dempster in Lesmahagow.

Presume, because of the unusual name, and the place being Lesmahagow that these must be relatives of yours.

Thanks Jean! I have no birthdates or place of birth for Catherine McVake or William Clark, or their children. Thomas Smith & Catherine Clark were married in Lesmahagow, but that's all I know, I'm assuming they were born there. I'm waiting for a quiet day here so I can go investigating on Scotland's People.

Thanks Jean. I managed to find them in ICI, if I'd waited half an hour I could have taken the lazy way and copied yours ha! I've been looking and can't find anything else for Catherine McVake. She and William Clark married about 1855, but I can't find any record. I don't expect you to do the research for me, but pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. :)
