Worth a try, searching for an elusive gt grandmother

Post by Maud Jarvis » Fri Jul 18, 2008 3:46 pm

Up until now Ihave searching for my missing gt grandmother only in England, since she was born and lived in Derby (born 1850)
However, my last sighting of her was on the Scottish 1881 census in Perth, with her husband George Nelson Grant (b.1841 Edinburgh) and my grandmother Mabel (b,1874 Derby)I have no idea why they were at tha time in Perth, although I later discovered that one of their sons, also George Nelson Grant,(b 1870) had been in an Industrial School there (sadly no records are available) so this could have been the reason why they were there.

After 1881 she disappeared, and it seems that she and gt grandfather had separated, in 1891 George Nelson had a new "wife" Annie, and they were living in London, by 1901 they were in Leicester.(George Nelson died in 1919)

Then, I discovered that they had married in 1910 in Derby, George Nelson stating that he was now a widower.
Obviously his wife Mary Hannah nee Copeland, must have also been with a new partner and had adopted his surname. This meant I cannot trace her death.
I have searched the death indexes for England using both her married name of Grant and maiden name of Copeland, without sucess.

I have now wondered, is it possible that she met her new partner whilst living in Scotland. I do`nt know why I had not thought of this before!but it is a possibility, so in view of that, does anyone know of her, she was Mary Hannah Copeland born 1850 in Derby, her parents were Benedicta Copeland (nee Harris) and father William Copeland, they were living in Ockbrook Derby when Mary Hannah was born.

Do these details ring a bell with anyone?
I have come up against a brick wall searching for her and would love to know the answer to what happened to her
She obviously must have died before or in 1910, for George Nelson to state that he was then a widower and free to marry Annie Packer.

Is it possible for anyone to see if she is listed on the death indexes for Scotland, under her married or maiden name.Of course I realise that its possible she could have been listed by the surname that she may have been known by, that of her partner, would that have been possible to do so? or would that have been illegal?

If anyone does know about her, Iwould be so grateful for any information, thank you.

A couple of questions

Have you found Mabel in 1891 & 1901 and where was she living when she married?

Regards,
Annette

Thank you Nelmit & Currie
For your replies re my query about Mary Hannah Copeland
Re my grandmother Mabel, she was in Canada in 1891, she had been sent there in 1889 as an "orphan" arran ged by her sister Effie, this was not true, as she confessed to the Home later.
She married to Stephen Gagan, 1894 (originally surname was Geoghan) he had been sent to Canada in 1885 .(from the workhouse)
They left Canada in 1901 and went to Glasgow Scotland (Anderston) with my mother Laura Maud, who had been born in Canada in 1896)
where they lived for a while before going to live in Dalmuir.

Currie, I will look at the site you have mentioned, thank you.

Hi Currie
Thank you for the info about the website in Canada mentioning the name of my gt grandmother, I have just looked at it, and was astunded to see quite a bit of information about the Copeland family!

I have sent an email to the address shown and now hoping for a reply
to solve the mystery. They had given a date of death for Mary Hannah, but I could not find it on the English indexes, so perhaps she had died inScotland? hopefully the person will reply answering that question.

Once again, many thanks for your kind help.

I contacted the author of the family tree mentined, ut to my amazement, she replied that she knew nothing about Mary Hannah. There was a message on the ncestry boards, saying that this erson was in the habit of "lifting" names from other people`s family trees!!
Why on earth she does that I do`nt know!!

So, I`m back where I started, nless I can find the original tree May Hannah`s name had been taken from.I`ll just have to keep on searching.

Thank you anway for giving me the information.

Hi Maud
Is it possible for anyone to see if she is listed on the death indexes for Scotland
The death index on Scotlands People goes up to 2006, so you can search it online. I'm not seeing an obvious candidate, though.
There is a Mary Hannah Grant who died in 1897, but she appears to be a baby under 1yr old.

Inbetween 1881 - 1950 there are 18 Mary Copelands who died who were born in 1850 =/- 10yrs. But none seem to have a middle name beginning with H, and none have a second name of Grant....

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks you so much for trying to find death for Mary Hannah, it was very kind of you.

I am so annoyed atg the person who has given the info that Mary Hannah died, but without any details as to surname etc.
I was so disappointed to find that she knew nothing about her, why on earth she wanted to add Mary Hannahh`s name to her family I do`nt know

I have been trying to search the death indexes for England, by using abc or something similar instead of a surname, in the hope that I might stumble upon the entry, at least I only need to check the last quarter of the indexes as appaently she died in Oct, so at least that is a little bit of a help. Its such a nuisance not knowing what surname she had adopted.

At the same time I am searching through as many trees that I can find that may have Copelands or Grants in it, in the hope of finding which one
contained the entry about Mary Hannah, I am also goling to put an entry in the sites I use just in casethe suthor of the tgree may see it and respond.

At least it does show that somewhere someone has my family on their tree, I just hope I can find it.

Thank you once again for your help and taking an interest. I`ll try and let you know if I have any successful result.
