Watson, David
Looking for info on this specific Watson family while they were in Scotland.

David Watson b. April 25, 1818 in Logie-Pert, Angus.
Parents – David Watson and Susanna Ogilvie (Ogilvy) m. Nov. 24, 1817
Other children of David and Susanna
James – October 24, 1821
Anna – September 21, 1823

David Watson apparently married Marion Rutherford b. 1820 d. 1860 (in Canada)
Unable to find marriage info or birth info on William, James, Ellen, Anna b. 1855 and John ~ b. 1857.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Grandma Judy :D

Hi Judy

I wonder if this is David senior and Ann in 1851:

10 Mill Street, Montrose:

David Watson Head 56 Labourer in Gardens born Marykirk, Kincardineshire
Ann Watson Daughter 26 Flax Preparer for Spinning born Logie Pert

This would suggest that Susan(na) is dead by this stage and certainly I have not been able to find a dc for her.

I can't find a marriage for your David with Marion Rutherford and wonder if maybe they married in Canada.

Do you know when they went over there?

Anne

That David dies in Montrose in 1859 and is a widower. The difficulty is that you cannot be sure that it is your David because it does not give his spouse's name. The informant is however his son James who is residing in Dundee at the time.

That David was born in 1794 in Marykirk the son of Robert Watson and Helen Wisheart or Wishart.

One good thing is that there is a place of burial on the DC so you might be able to see if David senior had a headstone.

Hi Judy,
David Jr. is already in Canada in the 1851 census in Bathurst, Lanark County, Canada West (Ontario). Children William and James were reportedly born in Canada, so you would need to find their births there. Unfortunately, I only have access to Canada births from 1869 (on Ancestry.com). On the census, it is mentioned that they are members of the Free Church, which is possibly why you can't find their marriage in the OPR records in Scotland.

All the best,
Sarah

Ann & Sarah;
Thank you for your help.

Why would their marriage not be in the OPR if they were members of the Free Church? Would there be no records for their marriage around 1840.

That is good info, Ann. I had worked thru the David Watson's and had come up with Robert Watson and Helen Wishart as possible parents of David Sr.

The reason I don't know where they were married and when they came to Canada is that on their tombstone in Perth,ON. ; it mentions little Anna age 2 years and states natives of Scotland. So I had thought the children were born in Scotland......... but maybe not. Both Anna b. June 26, 1857 and John b. 1857 I thought were born in Scotland, but cannot find them in the statutory birth registration.

Thanks again, Judy

Hi Judy

The OPRs are the records of the Established Church of Scotland so if your people were Free Church they would not be listed on those particular registers.

There is no sign of David and Marion on the 1851 census in Scotland and Sarah has found them in Canada so it looks as if all the children were born over there.

I'm not sure that that is the correct David senior although it does look likely. The one thing that bothers me is that I would expect him to have a son called Robert if that was his father's name and there does not appear to be one. However I can't find another Ann Watson born around that time in Logie Pert.

Anne,
Marion died in 1860 and when he remarried he named his son, Robert E. (haven't found out what the E is for yet).

Oops I'm mistaken, David Sr. should have had a son Robert, and it appears his first son was David.

So I will keep looking....... thanks, Judy

Anne,
Thank you for your help. Where do you find all this info? Ancestory.com??

do they have Scotland's census, plus BMDs?

Is there anywhere to access BMDs thru the Free Church?

Thanks, Judy

Hi Judy

I got the census info from the Ancestry transcriptions which are always a bit dodgy but I had no reason to doubt these. The death certificate for David Watson senior (possibly) came from SP.

I tried very hard to find a death for his son James or any sign of James Watson born Logie Pert in the 1861 census but failed. The person I thought it might be had the wrong parents. If I'd managed to find his death that would have given us his mother's maiden name and would have been a good indicator that we had the right David senior.

There is no doubt that the David on the 1851 census is the son of Robert Watson and Helen Wish(e)art but what we can't prove at the moment is that he is the father of your David. It seems highly likely but there is no proof.

The Free Church records for the parish may be in the National Archives of Scotland. If you look on their catalogue it should give you some idea if the dates and places you want are available. Having said that it may give you little extra information.

Anne

BTW I don't see on the web that there has been a transcription done of stones in Rosehill Cemetery, Montrose at least after 1855 but someone might know. If you were hoping that someone might find the grave it would probably be best to email Angus Council and get a lair number and at least rough directions in case it is a big cemetery.
