William Buchan & Mary Bruce

Post by moresmall » Mon Aug 04, 2008 11:32 am

Hi all

Just recently discovered that William Buchan born 3 October 1781, &
died Bef. 1855 & Mary Bruce bc 1795 died 13 April 1860, were my 3rd
great grandparents.

They had a son George Alexander Buchan bc 1823, died 25 August 1893 in
Fraserburgh, he married Rachel Grant 1824-1881. They had 6 children,
the eldest being Mary Stewart Buchan (my great grandmother) 1849- 1913.

Can anyone help with information on William & Mary. Also looking for
info on the children of George & Rachel, I have their names and dates
of birth, but wondering who they married and their families.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Maureen

There is an entry for the marriage of William (as Wm) and Mary on the IGI for 7th October 1821 in Fraserburgh. Have you checked this out on SP to see if it gives you any information (unlikely as that is).

I guess you will have looked at Mary's death certificate so you will know who her parents are.

One of the real problems is that every second person in that neck of the woods has the surname Buchan and the number of potential Mary Buchans in and around Fraserburgh, Rosehearty, Rathen, Pitsligo etc. on the census is quite scary.

I can't find a record of any children for William and Mary but assume you have looked into all that.

Anne

In 1841 William a carter (51) and Mary (40) are in New Pitsligo High Street with young Mary aged 12. Given that and Mary's age at death it seems that she was born around 1800 (the ages are consistent.) Why do you think William was born in 1781? It seems more likely that he was born around 1790 from the census age which does not appear to have been rounded down.

I take it that you are sure that the Mary who died in 1860 is the correct one.

Hi Anne

thanks for posting a reply, sorry havent been online for a while, couple of wee problems to sort out.

Recently got a email from a genealogy contact who was looking into William & Mary for me, and he too is at a loss on them, searching GROS, and couldnt make any connections.

Leave it in "Work in progress" in the meantime and look into it another day.

Regards

Maureen

Hi Maureen,
Are these the children you would like to follow (from the IGI)?

Mary Stewart Buchan 9 Oct 1849 Fraserburgh
Christian Brown Buchan 1 Nov 1851 Aberdour
Jean Buchan 7 Nov 1853 Aberdour
George Alexander Buchan 14 Apr 1856 Aberdour
Eleanor Milne Buchan 15 Oct 1858 Aberdour
Margaret Ironside Buchan 1 Nov 1861 Aberdour

Have you tried going forward in the censuses? Here is 1861 (from Ancestry-- note Eleanor's name is a bit odd!)

1861
71 School Street, Aberdour, Aberdeenshire
Rachel Buchan, 36, Wife, born Fraserburgh, Aberdnsh, Farmservant Wife
Mary S Buchan, 11, Daughter, born Fraserburgh, Aberdnsh, Scholar
Christian B Buchan, 9, Daughter, born Aberdour, Aberdnsh, Scholar
Jane Buchan, 7, Daughter, born Aberdour, Aberdnsh, Scholar
George Buchan, 5, Son, born Aberdour, Aberdnsh, Scholar
Elador M Buchan, 2, Daughter, born Aberdour, Aberdnsh

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Lesley

I was basically hoping to confirm who I have are the correct William & Mary - as the parents of 2nd great grandfather, George Alexander Buchan born abt. 1821.

I have a copy of George's death notice, but havent been able to confirm the marriage date of 7 October 1821 ( given to me) or anything else about them.

Hi Sarah

Those are definitely family, the eldest daughter, Mary Stewart is my gt grandmother, she married Alexander Cardno.

George & Rachael are buried in Aberdour Cemetery, stone # 346, all the children except Mary are in the same grave.

George Jnr, died tragically during the building of the Cruden Railway in 1896, Christina died aged in Walton on Thames aged 28, havent got her death cert yet, could she have been away following the "Fishing".

Looking into Eleanor again, she died in Aberdeen in 1937, agd 78, dont think she married, as she too is buried with her parents.

I have very limited money to spend on getting certs, try to exchange information with others.

Regards

Maureen, from New Zealand.

Do you know if George was in the military? This one appears in 1881 and 1891 and is gone by 1901.

The Barracks, East Church Parish of Perth, Perthshire
George Buchan, 25, born Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, Private 42nd Highrs

1891

Hi Sarah

Sorry dont know if he was in the military, but dates are within the possible range for him.

I have a copy of the newspaper clipping about the accident that claimed his life, while working on the making of the Cruden Railway. His occupation was listed as a fireman, and the inquest into his death has his occupation as "navvy" ?? Unsure of this term.

I have George and some of his siblings on 1861 & 1871 census, but nothing after that, can anyone help out.

Thanks in advance.

Maureen

Hi Maureen,
I found Rachel and Eleanor in 1881:

1881
No 55 High Street Lane, Aberdour, Aberdeenshire
Rachel Buchan, 57, Wife, born Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, Labourer's Wife
Eleann Buchan, 22, Daughter, born Aberdour, Aberdeenshire

Also, I have found father George in all the censuses until his death-- do you have those? He was always separate from his family, living on the property where he was a farm servant.

Regards,
Sarah
