John McDonald - Brick Wall

Post by darylrodger » Sat Aug 09, 2008 10:05 pm

Hi,

I was hoping someone could help with this one. :?

I'm trying to find the following people;

John McDonald
Wood Sawyer (deceased by 1876)

Margaret Gray (formerly McDonald) m.s. Young

Parents of Donald McDonald who married Elizabeth Montgomery on 25th Feb 1876 in the Gorbals, Glasgow.

I would love to know when they married, when John died, and who his parents were etc.

Thanks,

Daryl

Hi Daryl
Can you tell us where you have looked already, please? Helps us to help you... Any sign on IGI or SP?
Parents of Donald McDonald who married Elizabeth Montgomery on 25th Feb 1876 in the Gorbals, Glasgow.
Have you tried a search for the birth of Donald? - his age will be given at the time of his marriage. That may give the parents marriage date, (depending on his age...living dangerously here! If he's over 21 life will/may be more difficult.....) and lead you in the right direction.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

According to Donald's marriage certificate he was 20 yrs old, and his bride 19 yrs. That's means he would have been born in 1856. I've already looked at Family search, but with no success. I've also been looking for his parents marriage pre 1856 but with no luck.

Regards,

Daryl

HI Daryl

Have you tried searching the 1871 census to see if John was alive then ? or even gone back to the 1861 to see how many more children they had, this would give you an idea of when John & Margaret married through the age of their eldest child.

I did do a quick search but don't have any more time at the moment, though I did find Donald & Elizabeth on the 1881 living in Angus Dundee with their children John age 5, James age 3, William age 1,.

Hope this helps.

Trish :)

Hi Daryl,

Form the IGI

Donald McDONALD b 11 may 1855 parents John McDONALD and Margaret YOUNG.

There is another birth in 1857 for this couple, a girl named Helen.

This 1855 should give you the parents marriage details.

Karen
Lochiel, McKinlay, McGibbon/McCubbin, Cunningham, McDougall, Burnside - Lanarkshire->Ayrshire.
Hay, Hannah, - Kirkcudbright.
McIntosh, McQuaters/McWatters, White, - Kilmarnock
Murdoch, Hope, McMillan - Muirkirk

Hi Daryl

I have found the birth of your Donald McDonald on SP, I had some spare credits which I wasn't using so here it is.

1855 Tradestown Glasgow 11 May @ 7.00a.m
Father John McDonald Journeyman sawyer age 28, UNMARRIED, 1 boy living, 1 boy desceased. Cohaber (I think) Inverness.

Mother Margaret Young her 3rd child, Islay (I think) Argyleshire age 25.

Maybe the team will help with what I can't read, this is on of the old certificates with tiny writing.

John & Margaret may have married much later.

All the best
Trish :)

Hi Trish,

Any chance you could upload the certificate into the TalkingScot Gallery? See what can be deciphered from there.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi,

I've posted a certificate today for John's death in 1874, but need help in deciphering it ! Can't make out the date of death, or his parents names.

Any ideas ? :?
