William Rodger - Help Please !

Post by darylrodger » Sat Aug 09, 2008 10:20 pm

Hi,

Can anyone help me with this one ?

I can't seem to find William Rodger pre 1880. He died aged 82 on 29th Sept that year in the Gorbals, and according to a census he was born in Bothwell. His parents were William (a farmer) & Mary, nee Rodger. He was married to Janet Johnston.

Any help would be much appreciated with this one !

Thanks,

Daryl

Hi all,
Just saw this post. There is another thread about this person:

Hi Daryl, What information are you looking for, exactly? I think you have his marriage and several censuses (1841 & 1851) judging from the other thread. If you could be more specific about what you want, maybe someone will come up with something...

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Ideally I would liked to know when William was born, and when his parents married. I've tried to find both without any luck. I thought I might strike lucky with trying to find any sibling's etc. but again I can't seem to find any. I think I'll just have to stop looking for this branch of the tree.

Regards,

Daryl

Hi Daryl,

You have probably already done this, but I did a search in the censuses for anyone named Roger/Rodger/-s born in Bothwell around the right time to be his siblings and came up with a short list:

Robert born about 1791, a carter
James born about 1791, a carter
Elizabeth born about 1796, married William Pettigrew
Agnes born about 1798, "formerly servant" in 1851
Janet born about 1801 (married Hugh Neilson)
Thomas born about 1806, labourer
Catherine born about 1811

The last three are definitely one family:
Thomas and Catherine are brother and sister in 1851
Catherine and Thomas live with Janet and her husband in 1861
Catherine is still there in 1871

Elizabeth and Agnes are also sisters on the 1851 census

The fact that Robert and James are also Carters as was William, is a good sign, but I can't find that they lived into the Statutory Registration period.

They all have the possibility of being siblings to William-- have you checked out any of them? You never know if any of their certs could have an extra tidbit of useful information...

All the best,
Sarah
