Help with Apothecary & Barrackmaster.

Post by Michelle nee Fenwick » Wed Aug 13, 2008 1:21 pm

Hi everyone, :D
I'm new to this forum and was wondering if anyone could help me.
I am looking for information on 2 people this is what I know already.
Here goes...
John Fenwick b 1815 Canongate Edinburgh? married Harriet Eliza Steel at Sheffield Parish Church 1837.He was an Apothecary with a shop in Sheffield. Harriet died in 1850 of lung ulceration in Sheffield.
John Fenwick is his father on his wedding certificate, and is a Barrackmaster [perhaps at Burnley?] I think his mother is called Margaret and she died in Sheffield in 1853 of pneumonia and was a widow by then.
I'd like to know more about this family you know the usual, any children, where John studied, fathers post as barrackmaster, any photos of them or where they lived/worked, did john remarry? Where John the Apothecary went after his wife and mother died because I can't find him in Sheffield.
Thanks so much, if you can't help me with this query any info about FENWICK would be great.
Michelle :?

The IGI at www.familysearch.org/ only gives 1 child to parents of those exact names:

LAVINIA CECILIA FENWICK Female
Christening: 05 MAY 1838 Saint Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland
Father: JOHN FENWICK Family
Mother: HARIET ELIZA STEELE
Extracted birth or christening record .

There is another similar couple in Gateshead having children in the 1860's but the father's middle name is Burnip ?

For John jnr himself a likely candidate is:

JOHN FENWICK Male
Birth: 18 JUL 1818 Canongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
Father: JOHN FENWICK Family
Mother: MARGARET DICKSON
Extracted birth or christening record

His parents married :25 JUL 1817 Canongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian

If these are his parents then he has a younger sister;

CATHARINE FENWICK Christening: 25 OCT 1820 Canongate, Edinburgh

Have you located the people on any census returns?
Try http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl to search for them.

A very warm welcome to Talking Scot [talkingscot]

Thanks for this info, I didn't know Lavinia was born in Scotland. The other info is right but not the family from Gateshead.
I know in 1841 census John Jr and family are living in West St Sheffield. I know in 1846 and 1852 the address is Portobello St Sheffield which is behind West St.
I don't know where John Sr the barrackmaster is I know on Margarets death cert she is a widow when she dies in 1853.
Thanks for your help

Hi Michelle,

I have just stumbled across this enquiry whilst researching my family tree and despite you logging this around 5 years ago, I thought I would chance a reply.

Lavinia was my great great great grandmother on my father's side having married John Pollard. They then had 5 children of which, Albert was one (my great great grandfather). He then had 2 children, of which Leslie was one (my grandfather) and then he had one child - Leslie (my dad!).

I have been quite successful in terms of this side of my tree and happy to share if you are still searching?

Regards

Keeley
