Post by Baldy » Mon Aug 18, 2008 10:26 am

Hi.
I am wondering "if" some any be able to tell me if St Michaels Cemetery,Dumfries has a list of who is buried there ??

I am after information (Head Stone Inscriptions) on Margaret Holmes Beattie & her husband William Pyle.
They are both buried there.
Dates of death are :-
William ---1953
Margaret ---1961

I live in hope

TIA

Hello Baldy,
St. Michaels cemetery goes waaaaaay back and can even boast as being the final resting place of Robert Burns.
There are some older Memorial inscriptions online and a book of inscriptions from 1876.
But I have not come across anything on more modern burials. Perhaps you could send an email through the Dumfries and Golloway Family Historical Society and they may be able to point you in the right direction.

They are a very friendly and helpful bunch who have been fantastic in their help to me since I began my online search.

Hello Baldy

The Churchyard at St. Michaels is full of very old graves so I would be surprised if there were many 1950s burials there. I have ancestors buried at St. Michaels Upper Cemetery, Dumfries at this time. This cemetery is quite large and was opened to relieve the one at the church. It is administered by the Town Council and is on the Craigs Road about half a mile south of St. Michaels Church. I agree that the DGFHS are most friendly and would be the best initial source of help. I suspect that to find the grave location would require a visit to the cemetery office where they have the maps. (sorry but I'm 350 miles away).

Best wishes
