Where does Alexander come from

Post by Geoff Rogers » Thu Sep 04, 2008 3:45 pm

Hello All

My Great Grandfather was called David Alexander McDougall Sime (born 1857 Cargill, Perth). He was the second child of William Sime and Ann McDougall and his paternal grandfather was called David also. I know the McDougall part was his mother's maiden name but I can find no trace of any Alexander in my research so far. Would Alexander have been a forename of somebody or another surname? Any advice gladly welcomed.

Regards

There are lots of options:

The minister who married his parents
The doctor [or midwife] who delivered the baby
A dead sibling of either parent
The 1st or surname of his aunt's husband

Or a distant relative who promised to leave any name-sakes a fortune in his will!

Could be either a forename or a surname. Remember that Alistair and Alexander are the same name, not forgetting diminutives such as Sandy.
